auto transmission problem 90 accord doesn't work in reverse and 4th.
This accord LX just slips when you put it into 4th or reverse. I have reset the car's computer because we were having problems occasionally when someone pressed the sport shift button (the green "S" light appeared on the dash and wouldn't go off), the car would not shift beyond 2nd gear, but this would go away if I reset the computer. This doesn't help now. Does this sound like a pump, a pump seal, a valve body seal, or do I have more serious problems? I have never worked on an auto trans. Is this doable myself, or should I just get another one from a wrecking yard? Help!

This may sound like a dumb question but have you checked the fluid lately? I had a similar problem with an automatic I owned before and it was doind it bc the fluid ran low.
Thanks for responding. I asked my daughter if she had checked the trans fluid and she said she had, but I might just check it myself. Thanks, Bob
On these vehicles, Rev and 4th are the same clutch pack. If mechanically you do not have rev and 4th at all, then I would say that the 4th clutch pack is burnt out. About the S light, If it ever comes on and stays on steady and will not go off, you have a bad TCM. They will burn out a diode inside them. It's under the passenger side floor board. If you have a code the D4 light will flash. You may have 2 problems here, because if you unplug the electrical part of the trans, you should still have rev and you will start off in 4th gear in D4. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the input. The s-light problem only involves the transmission not shifting beyond 2nd gear, and the problem resolves itself when I reset the computer. It crops up only every 6 months or so and never involves 4th and reverse, so you are right, it is a separate problem and is more of a nuissance. You think that it is a clutch pack problem. What I want to know is if the problem is fixable by someone like me who has worked on my own cars since I was a kid and have completely rebuilt a number of engines, but have never worked on an auto trans, and will it be cheaper to buy another transmission from a wrecker or spend the necessary money for parts? The trans has over 250 k on it. Bob Martin
If worst comes to worst and you have to buy a new tranny they are very inexpensive.. I see them all over where I live on the west coast.. Where I see your from as well!! ;-)
Thanks for your reply. I was just wondering if anyone had installed clutchpaks on a honda automatic and how expensive and technically challenging this might be. Bob Martin

Thanks, I think you helped me make up my mind; I will start looking for a good wrecking yard deal for another transmission. Bob Martin
