Default How much paranoia for you???

I got the green light to buy an ITR. I've wanted an ITR ever since it came out. I used to own an 99 Si and dumped way too much money into it to make it like an R. Sold it and bought a a brand new 06 Accord because of a new addition to the family. I had to sepcial order it in Taffeta White with 5 speed manual, and I slapped a brand new red-stitched OEM shift **** (that I saved for a while) on it the 2nd day I got it.

Now that the little guy is almost 4, and I don't need it for a DD, I'm hesitant about buy an ITR. I want it bad. It's like an R addiction. I lose sleep thinking about it. I would not track my R. It would be more of a garage queen with occasional weekend driving. I really want it just for the sake of owning it.

BUT I don't know if I can handle the level of paranoia being an R owner. The Twin Cities has to have the highest theft rate for imports in the nation.

I dunno...

The best theft deterrents (although not 100% foolproof) are a good alarm system and a garage. If you have neither, then I wouldn't suggest you owning an R. But I am sure you are responsible enough to own one.

If you will be losing sleep because you worry about your R, then don't buy one.

yeah as long as you have a garage..its safe to stay.. especially when u say ur not going to track it or dd it, owning one shouldnt be a problem. jus as long as u stay close to it and not leave it anywhere for long periods of time.

Don't go to the mall or to a movie and the paranoia will be less. i have more paranoia for the one that I don't daily drive just because I have so much $$$ in it. Good alarm, garage, and being smart about when/where you drive it should help to keep it safe.

Paranoia is a problem with you, not with the car. Just take the usual precautions noted above. And you CAN daily drive it if you want to.

If it gets stolen - ANY car can get stolen, and with normal precautions, it's relatively unlikely, but IF it happens - that's what insurance is for.

However, if you've always wanted one, then you SHOULD buy one.

Kinda funny when reading this it sounded a lot like my situation (except for the little guy). I used to own a 00 Si, spent money modding it but always wanted an R. After I sold my Si we got a Honda Pilot. I never stopped wanting a Type R though and when I got the green light I didn't waste much time. My area is bad for theft too but the R sits in the garage 95% of the time and is not my daily driver. I bring it out on weekends and when its nice out and there is paranoia but thats good, there should be. I kind of wanted one just for the sake of having one too but once you drive one it makes it all worth it! Definitely get one as long as you have a garage to heep heR in.

buy it...you wont regret it. Type R is a one of a kind car. Just be careful where you park it, trust your instincts, if something doesnt feel right dont park it or leave it.

Thanks for the replies...

Yes, I have a 3rd stall that has my riding mower, the family bikes, and a lot of junk that will be cleared for a new R. I also live in the burbs, in a neighborhood where everyone is on 2.5 acres.

I agree that a little paranoia is good. It reminds you that you have something super special and rare....

I'm losing sleep on the decision. Once I own one, I think I can go back to a normal routine of sleeping at 1 AM every night, versus 3 or 4...

Once you get one you will lose sleep for a different reason, you will be going out to the garage all the time to admire heR!

gotta agree!

Dude I daily my Japanese R for now. Theres always a high percentage she'll be tampered with but I'm mostly paranoid somebodys gonna ding her up (parking).

I say the best defense it not to put yourself in that situation PERIOD.

Owning an R is in a league of its own- you R owners can DEF agree with that statement.

You guys feel comfortable going to the mall or anywhere with a large parking lot? (For those with a quality number of anti-thief) I'm thinking about getting an R as well...

I used to live in Ft. Myers, Fl. theft is pretty big there. I never drove my car to the movies, never to the mall, I always watched in my rear view to make sure no one was following me. I have the factory alarm installed. I kept it in the driveway at night. I just parked my other two cars to block it so it would be harder to tow. You'll always be paranoid about it but you can try your hardest to keep it safe it you should be ok. Or do what I did, I moved out into the woods in NC, I never worry about theft here. There might be 10 ppl in this town who even know what Acura is.

Owning the R is definately worth it. I love it.

You guys are nuts! An ITR is nice and all, but to buy one just to let it sit in a garage? And to lose sleep over NOT having one? Eeesh...

The reason an ITR is at all special or unique is how it moves people when they're turning the wheel in anger. Whatever, your money. I have doubt that it'll make you happy or less paranoid once purchased though. To further that thought, if you got one and it did get stolen, would you have a nervous breakdown or something?

<--- Never looked into getting another R for a variety of reasons, and theft paranoia was high on that list.

I live in Miami. Break-ins happen all the time here especially when I lived at the dorms.

If you have a garage and the right security I think you should do it. I myself have ALWAYS had the dream of owning an R. Good luck man and hoefully one day I'll join you.

if you dont own a garage, live in shady area, or keep it on the street, its not worth it.

you'll start to notice hot spots with the ownership, like where not to park and where you can. layers upon layers of security will keep you sane and keep your car.

baseball games, etc. no can do. concerts, forget about it. malls/movies, okay with security unless you live in like north jersey then forget it. you'll start to ration your social life bc of your car, something i dont really enjoy.

it all depends on where you live and who can see it where it sits. out of sight out of mind is the best security.

It's not too bad for me. I've only owned the car for a couple days now but I haven't really thought too much into it.

My 00 Si had a ITR swap, ITR interior, 5lug, turbo kit. Was bright red w/ oem wing and gunmetal wheels. It sorta stood out. Basic security.

My 92 Cx hatch had 5lug, turbo kit, itr trans, 100% complete ITR interior. No security.

I've had a car stolen but it was a simple 95 Ex that I tried to convert to a Si(si brakes, wheels, seats, etc etc). If someone wants my car bad enough, they will take it.
I don't lose sleep over it.

My area had 40 hondas stolen last year. All were found in a field upside down.

So... you pretty much don't want to park anywhere in large parking lot where you won't be by it for a long period of time. (ex: amusement parks)

reading the original thread reminded me of how special this car is and how it was for me as a first-time owner. the pride and joy mixed with feelings of fear and paranoia...now here i am trying to sell her 9 years down the road from brand-new...kinda nostalgic to hear stuff like this and remind me how "lucky" i really am with #510.

my advice is to just be smart and use common sense. most of the thefts you hear about happen because the owner got careless and let his guard down. nothing much you can do about garage break-ins or where they just physically take it from you.

just remember, owning an ITR is like having Jessica Alba tell you she's yours over and over again whenever wherever, while everyone else wants her. and everytime you take your R out, its like Jessica in a two piece for all to admire. BE CAREFUL!
