Post build thread #1: F2D on the cheap

Update 1: initial engine build and first test fit (Dec. '13)

Update 2: complete remaining 10% on the engine (March '14)

Update 3: second test fit. finalize fabrication items and wiring routing. [July '14]

Update 4: completed driver's side mount bracket (first revision), marked frame rail for A/C compressor clearance, made final cuts to oil pan flange to clear the inner CV joint and found that accessories bracket system version 3 will be needed for final install. (Dec. '14)

Update 5: Chassis ('00 EJ6) has retired from daily driving duty! Second version of driver's side mount complete. version 3 of accessory drive complete, clearance cut to frame rail done. (May '20)

what is this...

-F23A1 block, crank, rods (ported oil pump, balance shafts eliminated, H23 ARP head studs)
-K20A3 pistons and rings (stock, rotated 180°)
-F22A4 head (reman-ed, HD springs and Ti retainers, reground cam; Delta 272)
-H23 intake manifold (IAB delete, mild porting, BWR pro-cast 68mm TB)
-K23A1 Injectors (RDX, Rosko Racing fuel rail) [thanks PirateMcFred!]
-D16Y7 engine harness (heavily mod-ed to fit, partially "tucked")
-H23 exhaust manifold (downpipe modified to fit)
-P06 P75 ECU w/ S300
-F2D adapter kit (Bisimoto/Exospeed)
-S20 5spd

other stuff...

-no-name Aluminum half radiator with 1.25" inlet/outlet
-Exedy stage 2 clutch
-Trubendz "cat back" in 2.5"
-manual steering rack retrofit
-mild suspension upgrades

you want to hear the story I guess.

I was given a low-mileage JDM F23[[i]A1] for free. I had no plans for it but I knew I preferred the chassis dynamics of my EJ6 to my CG3 (which already had this same engine...) As it turned out, some fellow in California had a kit for adapting this engine to the transmission in my Civic. Oh and BTW his record-breaking drag car uses an F22A in part because the head flows so well. I guess I should use the same. So what are guys doing with the F22A in street cars for affordable power? H23 manifolds fit and I can get a good (but maybe not great) cam regrind for $100?! I'll need more compression and more fuel to make the best of those changes. Believe it or not some of the K-series parts will work off the shelf and do just that. So that's how it started.

I also was committed to it remaining a street driven, reasonably practical mode of transportation. So A/C would be a requirement here in the southeast. Other expectations that developed as I researched similar builds. In stock form, the F23 would nearly double the torque of the D16 it was replacing without having to rev nearly as high. But I do enjoy being able to wind it out from time to time. so good low torque and decent top end would hit the spot. It seems that 200hp/180tq are pretty doable. With the chassis side pretty well sorted, those numbers should make for a nice back-roads car.

But, will it ever be finished...?

Can't wait to see this thing come together. I forgot, I also have a chip that has been tuned for a F22A6 with I/H/E and a 272 cam, so it should at least be a good basemap to begin with.

This car is going to be a torque beast.

Good job on the BS install. I got the kit and had the same problem on the f23a5.. I just went to lowes and got the steel plugs and drilled and tapped the whole myself.. I didn't feel like waiting on shipping and trying to contact Kazien Speed.. but now Guess i should have it would have been easier for me... People say that the h23 balance shaft kit would have been a direct fit .. I assume you got the h22 kit.. its the same one I got because there where no other options on the website for the h23 kit.. if i remember correctly.

Looking good! May i ask why you f2d kit instead of just the straight f22 swap with a h22 tranny?

well there were a few reasons. It seemed sensible to use the transmission that I already had in the car if I could as opposed to finding another one that I knew was larger and a little heavier. I would also need to get mounts for the full F-series swap. with F2D I reuse all but the driver's side engine mount.

Also, I really don't like the cable shifter on the H and F-series transmissions. it feels sloppy to me, even when it's not worn out.

I didnt know the f22 bolted right up to stock d series mounts besides the drivers side? What about front and rear mounts?
