2-3 thousand would be plenty to seriously upgrade your car, but im assuming you dont have that right now? lol
Well for a couple hundred you can add some decent parts that would be the building blocks for making more power down the road. Aside from nitrous, turbo, or an all motor build- on a limited budget your definatly stuck with the basics.
The basics go for any car, honda or not. IHE (Intake, Headers, Exhaust). Adding a cold-air intake, or a short ram intake in combination with a high-flow air filter will help your engine out on the breathing side. High flow headers (can be found online, or even on ebay for pretty cheap $60-300), and a full exhaust system or just a high flow muffler will help on the exhaust side (and of course will give your ride a nice and beefier sound). Just be carefull in your choice of performance mufflers... stay away from the "coffee can, or fart-can" style mufflers- although they flow well, unless your car has some serious modifications you dont need that much flow, and your car will sound like the stereo-typical honda (the high pitched, raspy bad sounding exhaust). I have always reccomended the Dynomax mufflers (can be bought at local parts stores for about $40 each). They sound great and leave a slight amount of backpressure which is actually desirable for a car with minimal engine upgrades (your powerband will be a little more even powerwise), and you wont be killing your ears when you drive down the interstate (sigh...been there before 1 too many times... haha).
You can also upgrade your ignition system with new and better plugs and wires, and MSD actually sells a distributor cap kit that allows you to use an external coil.
Always start with the basics and go from there. Serious modifications take alot of money... believe me, I just got done with my engine build for my '91, all forged engine internals, new clutch ect., and planning turbo in the spring, and Im already in the multiple thousands range!
-good luck, and have fun!
