Default 1998 V-Tech Civic 'Check Engine' Light...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is my son's car and he's away in the USMC... The car sits alot, but I try and drive it once a month...

Thats what I planned this AM, so I started it up and everything seemed fine... While I was moving other cars around, I noticed the 'Idle' was going up and down like it was running out of gasoline, but it never quit running... I put it in Reverse, Idle stabilized, and I moved it up and down the driveway... Everything seemed fine...

I shut her down and opened the hood, visually everything seems fine... Gas Tank is Full, Oil Level is Fine... Can't 'see' anything out of place...

Start the car back up, then the 'Check Engine Light' comes on... Rev it up a few times, it's Normal...

I don't trust taking it on the street, it so I put it in 'Drive' to park it... I noticed it surge when I pulled forward... While sitting still and Reving it a little, it surged at 1800 rpm to 2500 and back down...

I shut her down and used another car...

Whats the first thing to check???

I'm thinking 'Water' in the Gasoline... Would that set off the 'Check Engine Light'???

Thanks...

Here's how to retrieve the CEL code(s) from the ECU at home. Could be a problem with the IACV, but pull the code to be sure.

Nope, other than being lowered, it's bone stock... What is needed to check the codes? I'm sure the one for my BMW won't work...

I have no idea how to get 'On Board Diagnostics' to work, or if it's possible without special tools...

I sure hope its something simple like an O2 Sensor...

Here's a thread that's very good at explaining how to retrieve the codes.
