Default Tuning & ECU management

Hey guys,

At what point do you have to upgrade a fuel management system?

I was going to install new cams & cam gears this week. Do I have to worry about it yet? Or will the mechanic that does the install be able to do the timing and all without Hondata or anything?

Thanks

You can set CAM timing without the use of a chipped ECU or piggyback system. However your car isn't going to run well without changes to the Air/Fuel ratio which would be handled by an aftermarket system like Hondata. Another option is to order a chipped ECU from Phearable.net. They will send you a custom basemap on a chipped ECU based on your specs. I just ordered one, it should arrive this week. I will let you know how it is. I have Skunk2 stage 1 cams in my car...

so what does their chipped ECU mean you have to do on your end? does it require you to have some sort of computer software to edit anything??

(p.s. i love how you're just on top of all my threads...lol)

They do a VERY good job on the basemaps, my car ran 10x better after one of their tunes.

All you do with them is send them a list everything you have on your car (cams, I/H/E, fuel system upgrades, internal upgrades, etc.), they burn a tune to a chip and can either install it in an ECU for you, or if you have a chipped ECU already, you can buy the chip and pop it in yourself. There's no software or anything on your end, the best thing for you to do SPECIFICALLY for your set-up is a dyno tune, but if you're just doing smaller upgrades, then the Phearable route is the route I'd go.

You just happen to be asking a lot of the questions I was asking when I first got my car. Now that I am invested in your build I expect you to let us know how your car turns out in the end... ;-)

Okay update:

Made a friend @ honda.

1) He's building me an OBDI ECU, and I'm ordering the VTEC conversion from xenocron.com (lovely site btw), along w/ the OBDIIB to OBDI jumper harness..

2) He has a friend that's going to tune for me with Neptune.

Couple questions I do still have:
Once I get it tuned...will I have to get it retuned with every new upgrade? Or is it like an automatic type deal where the computer picks up changes (i.e. turbo)? Also, in order for this guy to tune my car, does he plug in a laptop with this "neptune" software on it? Is tuning a fairly quick process? After he tunes my car and he unplugs his computer, is everything just automatically saved on the ECU? How hard is this skill to learn on your own?

e.g. Say I wanted to run my own laptop to tune my car in the near future...I'm guessing I'd need my own copy of Neptune or Chrome installed. After that is where I don't know what to do.

I also see the name hondata thrown out there a lot...what's the difference in Hondata, and the route I'm going (chipped ECU, jumper harness).
