Default What do you do with YOUR black purge canister?

Hey guys, my tuner advised I can eliminate that black purge canistor for the fuel tank as it basically no longer fits in my engine bay due to my setup, etc.

What do you guys do with those 2 black hoses going to it? Leave them hanging and wide open? Connect them with 1 big hose?

Thanks

Your talking about the charcoal canister? I just left the steel lines open.

Yea I am, but the other side of it went to a little tiny black can (half the size of a coke can if I had to guess), and then a line off the bottom of that ran back under the car..

Thoughts? Could I jsut get a hose from Pep Boys and connect the hard line directly to the smaller coke can? Sorry for my "uneducated" comments, I'm just not real familiar with this part of the car

just take it out what year is your car ? cause if its newer like a 00 then there is a hose on the firewall you can run one line from the fire wall to the line thats on the steering rack and you will never smell anything.

edit yea just buy some line and connect the two ends after you remove it.

Its a 2000 Type R...There is the hardline against the firewall that stops about mid-way across the firewall that had a 1/2" black hose running to the purge canister, and then on the transmission side of the engine bay there is the smaller black coke can looking thing that had a hose running to the purge canister, and then has a hose running fromthe bottom of it, back down towards the steering rack and under the car.

It's called a charcoal canister, basically it eliminates fumes coming from the gas tank for emissions reasons.

yea after you take the canister out run a line from the fire wall to the to the open end on your steering rack i would keep the canister around for if you ever have to go threw emissions. let me no if you need a picture or anything.

Lol yea actually a picture would be awesome man. What about that "other" little black canister on the transmission side and the line running off the bottom of that to the steering rack and then the "T" running up to the fuel filter? Can I get rid of all that?

I've always wondered if we could use it as a catch can. Never really looked into it since I haven't had a need for it just yet. Anyone else considered it?

Use the charcoal canister as a catchcan? I doubt you want to do that as it is completely full of charcoal media (activated carbon).

As for the OP's question. I would just put a piece of hose on the steel line and route it toward the ground in the engine bay, so any fumes from the fuel tank are directed to the airflow under the car that will take them out from underhood.

Awesome...what about the other side? ie, the little black can that has a hose running under the firewall?

For the two hardlines that is on the firewall your going to have to either leave them open or cap them off because you dont want debris or anything going in there. But if you cap them off, i would reccommend drilling some holes in the caps because it will build pressure in the fuel tank. Trust me.

Don't try to plug up the lines or the fuel tank will be under heavy pressure.

I have installed a checkvalve with a cracking pressure of 1-2 PSI, and then plumbed the line back into the charge piping. I still want the fuel tank to vent, but I want to get rid of the canister. All this is technically doing is vent fuel vapours back into the engine whenever the fuel tank builds enough pressure. It will do it just about whenever you are cruising, etc.. it's so minor it will never affect the car (you won't even detect it), but it will never vent under boost because there is a checkvalve.

So now when you fill up your car, you still get a nice "OEM" hissing sound when you undo the gas cap

i guess im going to route that big one down to the ground. Im always worried about getting water in it when i'm rinsing the bay.

I just ran a vaccum line from the hardline in the firewall to a T on a vaccum source on the motor.

I also used a check valve as well for mine but I do not route it back to the motor. I like the nice "oem" hissing sound.

Activated carbon just adsorbs organic chemicals.

I never really looked into the design of the charcoal box so I wasn't sure if it would work as a catch can. I do like the line with a check valve though since it would still be emissions legal as it is a closed loop. The way it comes stock is usually a solenoid in the line between the canister and the IM.
