Default Those with Intakes...

I just recently purchased an eBay special short ram intake... installed it no problems. However, I've noticed that pretty much in any gear when I step on the gas, it makes kind of a very faint whistling/whining sound. I haven't felt any loss in power, and the intake still has the loud air sucking sound, but there's also this whistling sound in the background. At first I thought it may be leaking air somewhere in the system, but I double checked all the connections and everything is tight. It also doesn't make any leaking sounds at idle or when revving in neutral... is this sound common?

The sound is from the air sucking through pin holes of the air filter. Ain't no performance without any roar.

small whining from an intake is annoying? pansy. try strapping on a racing medallion and take out your interior.

I don't really hate it... well I did when I thought it was because there was a leak. Now that I know it's normal, it's all good. On my last car (Golf) I had a cone-filter and it made the loud brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaa sucking sound, but no whistle; just wanted to make sure. Thanks guys!

you are not alone, I don't like that loud sound of my intake either. If I can start over, I'd get the DIY icebox with K&N drop in. Oh well, live and learn.

If I put a bigger air filter on the intake, will it get quieter? Since there is more surface where air can get into the pipe.

My intake doesn't whistle, it would be kool if it does that. Should all intakes whistle? Now I am not sure if it was me that messed up the install of the intake

Yeah, unfortunately it is an automatic. I reinstalled the intake today, and tightened some places where I thought was kinda loose. But it still doesn’t whistle ohh well.

My friend got the OBX intake setup .. im not sure what filter it uses exactly .. .didnt really look like my K&n but his setup .. would have a slight whistle at idle .... i personally didnt like it ... even after a fresh cleaned aem filter .. still no whistle here.. but it does roar at WOT .. harder to isolate and hear just the intake with i/h/c/e .. but when i put together in stages.. ohh it sounds good ... and my DC header with stock exhaust at the time ... you could hear the air rushin through the pipes

My old custom ram air didnt get that cold air intake whistle, but I do like the whistle CAI's give our cars generally, almost sounds like a turbo spool..... but please don't try to fool those with real turbos at a stop light
