Should I swap in a JDM LSD tranny?
I'm finding my tranny is just not gonna make it. It works but too many high-rpm grinds into 3rd have left my reverse hit-or-miss, and I've always had a 5th gear synchro problem.
I'm thinking about swapping for a JDM H22a LSD tranny. Mainly because I want LSD and a tranny with low kms on it. Is this a good idea or should I rebuild? Can some one let me know what kind of shape imported JDM LSD trannies are in, and how much they cost?
Also, if I were to install the transmission, what other 'mods' would be good to do at this point. I don't know the tranny install process, so any ideas/mods would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Well it should have low mileage thats a plus, it really depends on who the owner was and how they handled the transmission, if your are worried take it to a shop and have them check it out, otherwise stick it in and see how it runs, i doubt you will have to rebuild it...
oh and the second part, if you are going to have the tranny out do a flywheel and clutch becuase its a pain in the *** to do so that would be a good time to do it plsu the urethane shifter bushing...

Urethane shifter bushing? I would do the flywheel...lightened or aftermarket?
hey man I am trying to find a JDM LSD right now. I have been looking for around a month, and everywhere I can find wants either WAAAY to much for it or they can't get it. Even Sheng said he can't get one unless it's on an H22... If you find one, let me know cause I am looking for one myself. Maybe it would be cheaper if we bought 2 at the same time??? worth a shot.
The JDM h22a tranny is good for n/a. if you run turbo, id stay with the regular h22 one or even look at the h23a tranny for it.

a quiafe LSD is best but any lsd is better then none in my opinion.. and the urethane bushing goes on the linkage, it gives a more precise shift fealing and its only 15$ maybe less
lol sorry it looks like im flooding this thread but..
the flywheel depends on what type of racing you want to do.. some people don't agree with shaving a flywheel even though i might do it because i dont want to go to light because i want some resistance for downshifting and also it can effect your top speed ( perpetual motion i think it is ) there are many good flywheels out, im sitll trying to choose what my direction will be, but that is for sure the best time to install one either way..

I will be running a quaife eventually, but the funds right now will be good to cover the JDM LSD trany by itself!!
I'm thinking that any LSD will be better than the F22 trany I'm using now (really REALLY tall gears) and since I'm NA, i want the shortest gears I can get. I had one of my friends swap his trany's out (he had an h23 and went to H22) and he shaved about .5 second off his 1000' time. His 60ft was a little longer, but I think it was from the wheelspin he got with the h22 trany. Over all I think this will be a HUGE benefit to my lude and the LSD will just be a bonus!!!

LSD is good for ANY motor application, it really depends on what you have the money to buy. Personally id fix the h22 tranny and throw in a QUAIFE diff if you are going the turbo route. I believe the jdm tranny is geared mainly towards the n/a aspect. If you are going n/a, i recommend this motor highly. Its just like the gs-r guys that buy the ITR tranny's or the spoon ones.
As for clutch, id replace it with an ACT one.
As for flywheel, for n/a its good to lighten the flywheel. For turbo, you really dont want too light of a flywheel. For example, on your bike (say 10spd mtn bike, 1 being lowest (easiest peddling) and 10 being highest (toughest peddling)). Ok, when you start off in gear 2, its really easy to go due to the low gearing. On the other hand start off in 10th gear, its hard as ****. Now, when you get up and going, if you are in 2nd gear you will be peddling fast as hell and realize you cant build up any speed due to the low gear, you need a higher one (pretend this is a stock flywheel vs a 8lb one). Now, when you go fast you want to be in a high gear, so if you get a really light flywheel and you are running turbo, you'll be like the kid in 2nd gear trying to go fast on a bike. What i chose to do was take my stock flywheel and shave 3-5lbs off of it, i thought that would be a little better then just a stock one and also better then a light one.

So there is a difference between JDM and USDM trannies: (According to you)
Gear USDM\JDM
1st 3.31\3.307
2nd 1.95\1.95
3rd 1.36\1.36
4th 1.07\1.034
5th 0.87\.787
Final drive 4.27\4.266
I'm going to assum 1st is the same just rounded, and final drive is the same. Why are 4 and 5 the only different ones? I seems like the ratios are relatively the same. Too me it looks like the USDM ratios are shorter than the JDM ones! So I don't think gearing comes into play.
Basically it's a question of Rebuild + Quaife vs. JDM LSD, and how much better is an aftermarket LSD than the OEN honda one. And cost of course. I'm think the JDM tranny is much cheaper than the other route...

Last time I priced the Quaife unit for the H22 it was between $650-700 without shipping, but they will replace it for LIFE. Even if you drag on it, it's basically as bullet proof as you can get. The factory LSD is clutch type (correct me if I'm wrong here) and the quaife is gear type. The clutch type will be just as good, but won't last as long from what I understand. I think since I'm only putting out about 255 HP at the crank I should be ok with the clutch style. Anybody got a trany for sale??
Clutch type need to be rebuilt at sometime. However when ppl say it has to be rebuilt it isn't that bad. You'll probably have to have it rebuilt like every 10 or more years. Not a big issue I think. I'm sure that Honda is using quality parts as well. I've seen some messed up Nissan OEM LSD's but, so far I havn't seen any bad Honda LSD's?
