Default 2002 4cyl automatic tranny problems

160,000 miles, 10,000 miles ago changed tranny fluid back to back with the dealership fluid. If i am driving, stop at a red light briefly (catching an already red one) when green I accelerate the car goes to shift out of first into second and seems to slam into what i think is third (at the same time as second). The problem had got progressively worse. Now if I am at a complete stop for say 3 or so minutes and accelerate it shifts fine. Its only on a sorta stop and go, like it slams into gear. If it shifts normally after say sitting for 5 minutes then the tranny is not really bad? Help would be appreciated.

Well, 'not really bad' is a relative term and when compared to the operation to a 'normal' transmission, your's is truely.....BAD.
The trick is to determine what of the transmission is 'bad'; Exterior pressure switches / solenoids or something more "Interior".
The sad thing about this is that it's pretty much near impossible to determine this thru a forum like this. You'd need a Unit Repair Manual, a set of hydraulic pressure gauges and a multimeter to determine what's happening.

You have two avenues from which to proceed:
1) Have a local transmission specialist look at it and issue a report or
2) Assume the worst and have a local shop install a "New to You" unit.
or
3) Swap in a 5spd Manual Transmission. I don't really consider this as a repair option but more a 'Modification' exercise. It is quite extensive, requires routing around in the car's interior a lot and brings along some of it's own issues.

"1) Have a local transmission specialist look at it and issue a report"

Do you mean data logging software? I saw the sections in the honda manual, its funny I am a engineer, and design hydraulic manifolds, and i have problems understanding that complicated section. Is there such a person as a honda transmission specialist that i could drive to, (I live near new orleans)and have them take a look. Or does the local honda dealer supposed to have a honda tranny expert instead of a parts changer.

It's more following trouble trees, taking pressure readings at various external points and verifying correct sensor and solenoid operations with a multimeter.
If you're living within hailing distance of a large metropolitan area, try to find the oldest, longest in-business Transmission shop in your area.
The local Chamber of Commerse can most likely help with this.
I consider the BBB much like the AARP, more of an advocasy group (cheerleaders for local businesses).
The AAA (American Automobile Association) also certifies shops too. I'd want the oldest, meanest old salt of a tranny tech to look at it. Why not, He's probably seen it all.

With Transmission issues, most new car dealers are "parts exchangers". The manufacturers were getting killed with warranty expense re-do's when they were repaired in-dealer. Their attitude; if it sneezes - exchange it and return the core.

Hello,

I like P adams, he tells the truth. The problem Honda and Acura are having is that the 1st and 2nd clutch packs are peeling out. This includes Accord 4cyl and 6 cyl, Odessey, 3.2CL and 3.2TL.
