Want to remove or disable ABS dash light
All:
I have a 95 Accord EX wagon that the ABS has failed on. Happened twice, last time was over 5 years ago. Shop wanted 2K to fix it and I didn't.
Put over 80K on the thing since.
So I don't need the ABS. I'm good with that.
Light stays on so over time I have just ignored it.
I'm thinking about selling the car now and would like to disable the light.
Don 't get me wrong. I'm a full disclosure kind of guy and will tell any buyers the ABS is not functional, but to expect them to overlook the warning light like I have is probably asking too much.
I'd like to turn it off, disable it, or remove it.
I've done my homework and found some great stuff on removing the gauge cluster so I can go that route if needed.
I guess I have considered 3 ways to do this:
1. Remove cluster and disconnect the light or remove it.
2. track down the signal source and jump it out at the plug under the hood
3. find the wire into the cluster under the dash and clip it ( this probably will not work. Light is probably on in the absence of a signal, not the presence of a signal)
Any suggestions?
If I get behind the cluster, how are these light attached anyway?
I can see the back of the cluster with a small mirror, but in no way can I reach it and be sure I have the light I'm looking for.
I have the shop manual if that helps in any explaination.
Thanks to anyone that can point me in the right direction.

You might entertain unplugging the ABS control module if you're all hot to do this, but I wouldn't suggest it (Legally). You'd be in a better place to just make disclosure and adjust the price. You may find ABS isn't an issue for the buyer either.
Both the function and illumination lamps are retained by rediculously tiny bulb holders. To release them is easy; 1/4 turn counterclock-wise and pull. Reverse to lock in place.
You may have to take a back cover off to gain access to the one you want

Just seriously, why not just leave the light on?
If you're a "full disclosure guy" then wouldn't the next owner probably want to know the ABS was not functional? Maybe the light doesn't bug him. I mean what are you going to say?
"Yeah everything on the car is good, no CEL's or lights or anything"
"Oh sweet here's $xxxxx"
"Oh forgot to tell you, ABS doesn't work, peace out sucka! I pulled that bulb"

P
Funny.
Guys, I didn't come here looking for morality opinions. That I can do for myself and sleep at night. Don't presuppose I'm out to screw anybody. I'm not. I'll tell them the ABS and the ABS light both don't work and let them decide.
But thanks for your concern.
What I need is some technical help without the judgemental piece.
Adams and Chop,
Thanks for the info.

Fine,
Technical help.
If you can't figure out how to do it on your own, I'm not going to help you possibly defraud someone else. Why don't you spin your mileage back too - wouldn't want that to deter someone from buying the car either. The fact ABS is not working SHOULD deter someone from buying your car numb nut. *Edit* Not too mention you have just joined and haven't helped the community at all yourself - you're just looking to **** someone over with our help.

i pulled my dad's for the ABS(crappy KIA) and he sold it no problem, just told them they were shot, and been disabled + how to reconnect the light nbd.
seems a bit harsh, i mean if he was looking just to **** over someone he would've done it already not ask if there is a better way.....

How so?
The whole post is
"Hey everyone I just joined HT and haven't contributed anything at all, I just want to know how I can sell my car without the ABS light on to surprise the new owner. I can pull the bulb or unplug something as long as the light isn't there. I don't want someone to be sketched about buying my car because it has a warning light saying something isn't working that costs as much as the car to fix"
While a new buyer *might* be fine with having it pulled and the original poster *might* actually be honest the odds aren't in that favor. The odds are he's trying to pawn the car off and will not alert/inform the new owner at all and sell the car as in good working condition.
That's some scumbag bull **** there.
Blah i guess, It's all a lie to con an old lady right? and we all had to join at some point, i didn't tell i finally got my CB7(woot noob). Hate to jump straight to that assumption .... maybe it's just cause i've done it before so it makes since to me, bloody thing gets annoying.
why have you gone forever with out doing it, procrastinate much?

Bassist,
Yep. Just overlooked it and just now getting around to it. Thanks.

I guess Muffinman is allowed to have his own opinions, and he has now dug in too hard to come off his stated line without losing face and we all know his opinion is what counts anyway, but it seems to me, someone with the powers he has to see the future would spend his time doing something more productive than marking his territory on some internet discussion board.
ABS was an option back in 95. Not required to pass inspection. Car has been 5 years w/o a reject and the light shining bright all 5.
Muffinman, I'm sure you earned your name, I'm just not sure how.
Burger King hat is cute, however. Second job?
I'm gone.
Not worth the time.

ABS module is behind the rear seat underneath the trunk tray
unplug it and the light is out
i have a 93 and had the same problem, i would guess the module is in the same place on yours

Nice attempt at a burn - however I can assure you I've never worked at a Burger King. The point brought up that you've ignored it for years and are trying to disable it solely to not deter buyers is what raises flags.

Chesterfield County, Virginia around Woodlake area and you work as a General Contractor? Guess we'll know where that car is for sale huh? And wager you're ~45/46? Hopefully you'll prove me wrong. But to join the forum and ask how to disable the ABS light so you can sell the car - how does that not come off funky? Nice try Carl.

If the light doesn't come on when the key is initially turned on, why would you suppose a car has ABS? More than once I've had a seller say, "yeah, sure" when I ask about ABS... but when the light doesn't come on, you know the car doesn't have it and the seller is either ignorant or crooked.
Now if the guy was saying, "How can I set up a timer circuit to make the ABS light light up for a couple seconds when the car is started?" then you'd know there was some funny business at hand...
Well
1) Non-ABS Accords don't have the light - they have a blanking plate
2) They don't have the ABS setup in the engine bay
3) They don't have 4 disc, they have drums in the rear
So for it to be an option - he has a 1995 Accord LX, since EX had it stock and there was no SE in 1995.
How is removing the bulb so it looks like ABS is working not deceitful? The light is on to indicate an issue - and per his original post the issue is worth probably the same as the car. Do you really want to buy a vehicle like that? $2500 for a car that has a $2000 problem or $3500 for a fully working one?

it is wrong and you are LIABLE for not disclosing a major problem with the car. If the new owner got into an accident and they discovered that ABS had been tampered with they will sue the crap out of you and win.....thank you Internet for allowing dummies to be quoted
you said point you in the right direction?
1. sell car disclosing fact ABS is non functional
or
2. get the code and fix it. if it is the abs module, you can usually repair them for the cost of new seals
