Black carbon deposits on the inside of exhaust tip; a sign of a rich condition???
Honda's are supposedly set to run rich from the factory, right? I have a crap load of black carbon deposits on the inside of my Greddy PE tip and on the bumper above the tip. Is this normal? How do we lean out the fuel mixture without the aid of a VAFC?
Can a lazy O2 sensor cause a rich mixture? Other than using a scope, are there any other ways of testing my O2 sensor?
By the way, mine is an OB2 vehicle, there are two O2 sensors. Is the first O2 sensor used to determine fuel mixture? I assume the 2nd O2 sensor is used to check cat-convertor efficiency, correct? So this 2nd O2 sensor shouldn't really matter?
Any advice? Thanks.

By the way, I do have a VAFC. All my fuel setting are set in the negative ranges. I'm assuming it's not set back far enough. (It's been dyno tuned.)
better to run rich than lean. some black is good. if your getting it all over your bumper then your running to rich. carbon in the muffler is normal.
Have you had any problems with check engine lights associated with your V-AFC? I had one, wired it several different ways (1st per the manual) and all it did was throw lights. Mine does run very rich according to my muffler tip, now that I've removed the V-AFC. The V-AFC would lean it out, but one prolonged late night high speed run while getting my butt beat by my friends 5th gen. virtually melted the cat. Too lean for it. Honda replaced it free luckily. BoostedH23 is right, better a little rich than the least bit lean.
My wiring is all correct. No check engine lights unless I mess around with the settings, then it throws a MAP sensor code.
For example, if you go from a negative to a high positive and back down to negative, it turns on the check engine light, and throws a MAP sensor code.
For some reason, I think I have a lazy O2 sensor. Gotta get them checked.

check your plugs, it will give a far more accurate reading then wiping off deposits off your exhaust tip.

Even with a ZEX 75shot with no ignition retard; my spark plugs (Denso Iridiums) are showing very good signs of combustion. No problems here with the spark plugs.
Maybe it's time to upgrade the spark plug wires, since they're the original ones. Still have the year 1996 one them.
Nology wires?

I have a very black deposited muffler tip also on my Greddy SP. I also wonder if maybe I should replace my o2 sensor....hmmm?

WETANGBEN, that's what I was told, "to not use the Denso Iridiums."
But hey, after 5+ bottles, no probs.
I have my VAFC set to take away fuel, supposedly making the engine run leaner than normal. Still, I believe I'm running on the rich side of the mixture.
Maybe it's time for another dyno tune, this time with the nitrous.
And by the way, did you do 13.6 with the 75 shot nitrous? Street tires? Slicks?
Good luck with the VAFC.

I have carbon on the inside of mine as well, I think that is very normal, I do have some carbon around my bumbper.. Im running a fuel pressure riser (in the sig) it is running at 45psi wich is the richest I can use for the stock injectors, I have had no issues runing this high if I move it to around 35 then the car almost stalls when I rev it. the idle will drop after a rev and almost stall, the revs will slightly increase then, so I have left it at 45psi plus at this psi the car does feel a bit better
