Default obd0 jdm d15b problem

ok guys heres the issue, i got my crx yesterday and upon looking at the motor more closely, it is a jdm d15b, but the head is not a v-tec head.

if you look closely you may be able to see a block off plate where the vtec solenoid would be. so im begining to think that this motor may have been a pre-88 motor out another honda. or it was one of the jdm d15b carb'd models because of the valve cover and spark plug orientation. do you think you can help me out? im debating weather to try to get the motor to run.

its going to be my dd this summer. but i just wanted to see what you guys thought about it. im going to see if the motor runs as is, if not then i may pull it in favor of something else. i also have the opportunity to pick up a d15b vtec head(true vtec head) lol. it dawned on me though as i was looking at it yesterday. yes the bottom end is d15b but something is up with the head.....thats why im asking about it. has a block off plate there for some reason.

can anyone just help me confirm that there was NEVER a d15b sohc that was vtec with this orientation on the head!!!

ive found information leading me to the 1988 crx 1.5x from japan. stating it was a dual carb setup with 106hp and 90 ft lbs of torque. but no vtec. im going to take that block off plate off and see if there is a hole back there. if so i would like to know why and what it is used for. this is driving me nuts.

From what i see its not a vtec head. Its mpfi which means its most likely an HF crx. I think u maybe right they dont have a d15b vtec.

thats what im thinking too. the crx is mpfi, it is an hf model. 91 to be exact. rather clean on the inside and needs a little work on the rust repair which i got about 3 months to do before the snow stops falling. are all d15b from japan the motors with the d16 rod journals and d15b crank journals? if so then good for me!!

it is the JDM D15B that came with dual carbs which came in the 88-91 JDM Civic 55X 5 door shuttle (and others) and was 98hp - the block-off plate is covering up the hole where the mechanical fuel pump for the carbs was located - the fuel pump ran off an extra lobe on the cam - we have swapped several of these into 88-91 DX cars that had a bad engine - only the D15B VTEC engines had the D16 rods

yeah, you should see an offset lobe on the cam that is right behind the hole with the block-off plate - the mechanical fuel pump has an arm on it that sits on the eccentric lobe on the cam - the pump was similar to pumps used on earlier carbed CRX/Civic cars like this:
