Stock tach off by 500 RPM.
I have a 1990 EF with a B18A1. Recently bought it.
It has a big ugly Autometer tach and shift light screwed to the gauge cluster surround. I want to remove and sell the tach and shift light, but the stock tach is not accurate.
The stock tach (My car is a DX with an SI interior) is always off by 500 rpm. So if I ditch the Autometer I won't have an accurate tachometer anymore. Is there any particular fix to this?
Thanks guys

Did someone remove and reinstall the needle? If they had ever been removed for paint or any gauge work, they can get installed wrong. You can re-index it using your second tach unit.....if you trust that

i had the same problem in my four door when i took the tach out it seemed to be more accurate i think its cause they wired it into the back of the factory one through the harness.....
Hmmm, ok well I"ll take out the Autometer and see what happens. It could be because it tapped into the factory harness.
I know the tach was exactly 500 off b/c I checked it with a digital timing light.
Thanks guys,
Dirk

maybe your autometer tach is off.... think of that?
mabe your tach signal is weak
you have your tach signal wire spliced into the green wire at the distrubutor?

is your mph off as well i had a similar problem with my swap it was just beacuse i had a different roll out
best way to check if your mph is off is pull up next to a new civic on the freeway and passe him then look at his huge speedometer with the big numbers and compare to yours

no way.ive had my factory tach,an autometer, and my vafc all going at the same time.they might have been 100-200 off.the autometer is much quicker, but definitely not off 500rpm.
if is is constantly off by 500 (idling at like 0) you just need a new cluster, the same thing happened to my 91 dx hatch with the crx si dash and cluster, i replaced it with a si hatch cluster from the local j/y and it works fine now.
Working on it
haha
Thanks for all the help guys. I'll take out the Autometer anyways and If that doesn't fix it, get a new cluster. I need a new surround anyways since the previous owner used wood screws to hold the tach and shift light down. And If I get another cluster I'm doing a DC cluster swap.
