Civic Si clutch burnt with just 6500 miles
Hi,
Unfortunately my clutch burnt while climbing up the mountains in the bay area. Thankfully, I could pullover to the shoulder. I got it towed to the nearest honda service station and the service adviser says that the clutch got burnt due to abuse. I dont buy it all. I have been using stick shift for the past 3 years and I dont rev too much as well. I dont know how clutch can wear out at such low miles. The mechanic is charging me $1700 to replace the clutch. Can someone please let me know if this is a fair charge? American honda customer rep says he cannot assist as clutch is not covered under warranty. The reviews of the service station where my car is right now is very bad and I am concerned whether they will do a good job fixing my car. I wanted to get it towed to my dealer but I was quite far from it. Can the clutch really wear/burn down so quickly? Please post your thoughts.
Thanks,
Ravi

try to get it to a dealer that you feel comfortable with. you can and a couple people have burned out their clutches very fast on the fg/fa. you are pretty much screwed with getting this covered under warranty though.
i dont know if that is a good charge...but i would call around and see what other dealerships are charging. maybe there is someone local that will do it for you for a lot cheaper too.

Thanks for your reply...The mechanic has already ripped apart the transmission to check if clutch failed due to a defect or not and he doesnt seem to see any defect. I pretty much dont have a choice as I will have to get it fixed by him
I dont know how the clutch can wear down so quicky when I dont ride the clutch or rev too much. Has anyone had a similar problem? Is there anyway I can get some help from American Honda company like an inspection or some thing?

They will take care of you, and if anything Honda has a 1 800 number , just call and raise hell. Iam sure they will help you out. American Honda does take care of there honda owners. Ive witnessed many goodwill jobs that Honda has covered at least some of the bill to help out the customer.
well, for one thing, would you rather have someone that knows what there doing and working on your car, then some joe smoe pulling your transmission out of your car and not sure if they put it back together right or not. I mean making sure everything was put back in its place, clips, wires making sure they put everything back the way it came out. Ive done so many repairs on transmissions on hondas that came from transmissions shops that the previous repair from a aftermarket shop does such a hack job, I found the o2 sensor ripped out of the connector from the sub frame being dropped, they must have forgotten to disconnect the o2 sensor before removing the sub frame to remove the trans., connectors being smashed, from the wrong length bolt put in the transmission and punching a whole in the block, and I removed it and coolant started to leak out of the block. So many horror stories. I can't believe the things ive seen. I mean its been so bad If I was the owner and only knew I would have just did myself a favor and drove the car off the cliff and thanked the guy who ****ed my car up from such a hack and slash job. Trust me its worth taking it to the dealer.

i wouldnt go to some random guy and be like can u change my clutch. reputable transmission shops arent gonna **** somethin up.
my buddy paid around $400 for labor a couple years to get his clutch changed in his integra at a reputable shop. add another ~$200 for a clutch, and you're at less than half of what the dealer wants. $1700 is a major ripoff.
i paid 600 for an new oe clutch, resurfaced the flywheel and labor for my gsr. the dealer wanted 1600, and i worked there.
replacing the clutch was my first "major" repair....I didn't know jack **** about how to do it but if you research and take your time then there won't be any problems.
EDIT: and I'm not trying to brag about things i've done....I just wanted to illustrate that if someone takes the time to learn something about their car then they can do just about anything on it.

free labor tho man, got 60 bucks for each one 10/flag x 6 hours. i belive the RO said something like$1500 O.o customer pay lol, i imagine thats the type of person you are?
**** was gravy :D
used to zip them in and out and eat lunch while doing it .
Couple idea's.
1. Call Honda US Customer Service and plead your case. With only 6,500 miles, they might be willing to work with you.
2. Dynospot Racing in San Jose can do it cheaper for sure, and put in any clutch you want. They did mine and I have been very happy. They know Honda's and they know the 2006+ Civic very well.
$1,700 sounds really high to me. I mean the factory pressure plate is $165 and the factory disk is $135. That means they are charging you $1,400 for labor. That is what, like 14 hours worth of labor? When my mechanics at Dynospot replaced my clutch and flywheel, it only took them 6 hours.

Clutch is a wear and tear item, evidently it got worn down. Seeing it was in the bay area with very cramped roads and lots of hills, maybe you rode on the clutch too much? Riding the clutch does burn it out.

why? if your stock clutch can handle the power your engine's putting out then upgrading the clutch won't do you any good at all. the only thing that'll come out of it will be a sore leg.
