After the R...Impression: Z06
I'm deciding on a new car in the coming few months and took a look today at the Z06. I was able to test drive and I have to say it is one hell of a machine.
Contrary to the poor opinions of the interior I hear so often, I have to disagree. The interior is not the greatest out there, but I have no real complaints. The finish was very good and the heads up display excellent. The only interior piece I'd like to change is the seats. They are comfortable, but not the most supportive.
As for the power, it doesn't stop. Acceleration is brutal. The car can pick up from virtually any gear. I've driven Ferraris and Lambos, and this car is faster. (No, I haven't driven the Diablo 6.0, Murcielago, F40 or F50, but the Z06 is faster than a 512TR, 355, and Countach of which I have driven.) The Z06 is the fastest car I have EVER driven, but not as fast as the 550 hp GT40 I recently rode in.
The handling is excellent. The car feels much smaller than it actually is. Doesn't feel difficult to maneuver at all.
For $50K or so, I can't find a reason to get something else. The M3 is nice, but the engine stories I've heard make me skeptical. Plus, the Z06 will crush it on the straights and curves. Basically, the Z06 is a 911 turbo performance wise for 40% of the cost with cheap maintenance. I may be buying one in the near future.

wow I like that comment the power keep coming and coming in ANY gear. Its a beautiful thought. Basically the ONLY american cars I'd buy would be a z06 or NEW gt40. Thanks for the review
About the only US car I would consider buying. Only thing that would stop me is the middle-aged white guy with a fat butt in mid-life crisis thing. Also explains why the seats are not supportive.
My good friend just got a 2002 yellow z06...yikes..you wanna talk about fast...i too would have one if i had the money...the only american car i would buy...well...the new SVT cobra is kickin *** too...

I agree with you that the Z06 is crushingly fast, and a tremendous value. It honestly feels to me like a grown up ITR in spirit, if obviously not in execution. I just bought a similarly priced Boxster S, and while it doesn't have close to the ultimate performance of the Z06, I find it a lot more fun to bomb around in. And it feels every bit as good as the Z06 at the helm, and sounds.. well, sound is subjective I guess. Having driven both (and the E46 M3) extensively, the Boxster has a much more low-key demeanor and of course, it is a convertible. But it can still keep up with most anything anywhere other than a racetrack. Of course, I still have the ITR, so when I want to drive a hard-edge, track-ready car, I can do so. If I had only one car for all things, I could see missing the brutal feel of a Z06 or ITR. I guess dif'rent strokes for dif'rent folks...
If you do get a Z06, be sure to bargain like mad. I have heard of a lot of places selling these for not much over invoice, especially with the 2003's on the way. And the 385-hp ones, which are really only inferior if you're racing a 405-hp one at a drag strip, are amazing values used.

I'd think the stability control helps on the roadcourse and autocross.
Though, ... I'm courious as to how the M3s, Zo6 and Boxter S are going to stand up to a well sorted turbo ITR.
hehe ... guess I'll find out soon enough.
Their looks of amazement should prove priceless!

Z-06s are monster cars. I think they are awesome.
Please don't get the red interior! They look like *** after a few months.

I would consider one, if I had the mpney, although I'd rather have a Viper. I would also take a mustang Cobra R over the Z06.
A friend of mine on this board (Black ITR #666) got rid of his Nsx, his S2000 and his Itr, got a Z06 and a Matrix (for the family).
He loves the Z06 so much more than having the last 3 to toy with.
Next up is the twin turbo in the Z06.

I had strongly considered a viper.

ZO6 OWNS the viper and Cobra R!! 1/4 is the same. ZO6 blows away the Viper in braking and handling. Barely nudges out the stripped Cobra R. (which has no AC or Radio, I believe) To top it off, the ZO6 is capable of getting nearly 30mpg and has all the amenities necessary for a comfy drive everyday. And last I checked it is cheaper by quite a bit. And I wont complain about having magnesium wheels and a titanium exhaust...

You have got to be freakin' joking ...

Jon,
have you considered the 2003 Mustang Cobra? that is my current american favorite
high 12s stock, a pulley away from low 12s, 6 speed, looks like a million other mustangs out there, and $35K

The Z06 will be my next car if the R ever goes unwillingly.
I had the pleasure of a ride in the 385hp and was stunned at the power, alltho I would have to have the 405hp one...
just for giggles:
