Spare key for a 2001?
I went to acura and they want 75 bucks for a new key....
Its a 35 dollar "programming" fee (total bs)
and 30 for the key
2 questions
1. Can it be programmed without having to plug it upto the computer?
2. One of my dads friends has a shop and has a little hand held computer for cars thats like 2 grand, is one of those capable of doing it?

uh.. just pay the dealer.... why jack around trying to save money only to have it not work when you need it to cause someone did a half assed job..
How could it possibly cost acura anything at all to plug it into a machine to program it; I guess dealerships figure you can't really go anywhere else to get it done so they bank off of it. I don't see how any company but acura could program it, call any acura dealership that is in driving distance and get some more quotes, some may vary.
damn i feel bad charging $25 for one...it takes like 30 seconds to program a key..that's bs
if it works the first time, its going to work every time, so im not worried. I might just buy the key and walk around back and give a guy five bucks for doing it.

I have a 2001 also and got a spare key done at the dealership for $25 bucks. I'd say, try another dealership.

thats the bypass module for autostart right? I think I seem to recall someone going to the dealer and getting an uncut key programmed for around $30 to do an autostart in a prelude.. they left the uncut key in the car so that the autostart would work but had the key chipped...

I would use that logic on a mechanical part, but this is electronics, if it starts the engine once, then its going to work.
it was 75 bucks, i dont remember the split up, do the math, 40 + 35.
75 is a shitload for a key, if there is a way around it, im taking it.

I think 98 doesn't have the factory immobilizer/key chip.. I have a 95 so I don't know.. I think they started putting in the key chip/immobilizers in 2001 or 2000... I've got a spare key made for my non chipped key for my sister to use my car at the hardware store for around $4...
