drag hatch / 200 mph club?!
hey all, im getting rdy to start building my drag hatch, its a 91 hatch dx. now im wondering if in order go to out to speed week and try for the 200mph club what would i have to change? i know ima need longer gears, tires, and prob suspension so i figure 2 trannys. one for drag, one for speed week. anything else anyone can thing of? also anyone know any good set ups? or what tranny would be good for tryin to reach 200? ima use a si for drag. this is gonna be my next few yrs project so money isnt to big a factor seeing how i got time to save. any input would be greatly appreciated.
A longer wheel base......I cant imagine how squirrely a hatch would be at 200 mph. I am sure it could be done, and good brakes would be a good start.

well ive seen in the newest honda-tuning, a insight and crx, i know off hand the crx did somewhere around 190mph, but ya i know what ya mean, chances are higher of a spin

Wow. Seriously?
200 MPH is a serious feat in almost any car. Aerodynamics is going to be a huge thing to address cause our cars have the drag of a brick, sealing up gaps in between panels is big. The short wheel base is also going to be a curse, 200 mph needs length to feel secure. Gearing of course is going to be important, you'll probably want to get one of those 4.0xx final drives. And any engine that will propel a FWD honda to 200 mph is going to incinerate any stock 'si' trans you put on it for drag and probably top speed so be expecting to look into a gear set or a whole nother trans completely.
Building a true dual purpose car is incredibly difficult, I think you have got a lot of reading and understanding to do before you start actually putting money into this. Fast cars are designed by the builders fast, they don't come around via happenstance.

I'm pretty sure that Honda-Tech user "Thawley" is a member of the 200mph club, in a Honda, I believe. I don't really know him that much, but I'm sure he may be of help.
EDIT- Oh yeah, you might want to check the rules of the sanctioning body for the class you will run in. I'm sure you will have to attain your goal in steps(150mph,then 175mph,etc.) and the cage thickness specs might get bigger as you attempt to go faster. Thawley might know this stuff. Good Luck....

Your biggest and most firm limitation is going to be aerodynamics. I realistically don't see it taking more than 350whp to reach 200mph with the right gearing, but aerodynamically, I just don't know.
^word. there is lots and lots and lots and lots of money involved. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1ATLIa0l-M thats about the closes to 200mph your gonna get if you gotta ask how to do it. these are companies that have millions invested into research and development. i doubt you have money like this, or you'd be done by now. lol. but no seriously, /thread...
at speed week i have 2 5 mile runs that must average over 200mph together, ya i know its alot of money and time, but like i said my goal is in 2 yrs. so time and money arnt real big thing when ur talking yrs instead of months. ya im goin to run to trannys, on set up with short gears for drag racing and one with longer gears to attempt 200mph. also im gonna order the rule book when i comes out in may. i can build the role cage and everytihng, but like u said im not sure what size tubing to use. i do have to work my way up to 200. i gotta start between 125-150 then 150-175 then 175-200.
yes but if u read this months honda tuning, Doug MacMillan (worlds fastest acura) is making 600whp, but his wife, went 189mph in a crx with less that 400whp i beleive, so hp isnt the big thing, as stated before the aero of my cars is the big thing. i know im getting alot of flaming, but its a dream of mine to get beable to say i have got 200mph and show ppl the car i did it in. if it doesnt work it doesnt, but atleast ill have one hell of a story to tell
I would say (and this is a guess) use a dart b20+ tall deck block with a b16 crank some custom rods to get a hella big r/s ratio so u can get great revs. low compression pistons. and a realy good balance job. a gsr head with a wild port and polish. some real good springs (for revs) custom cams to make power up to like 12000 rpm. oversised valves. a topmount turbo manifold with a gt40 with a high ar. and a transmission out of like a california emissions b-series with a lsd. hasport extreme race mounts. realy big front breaks. and the ***** to go that fast in a hatch.
just my 2 cents.
one thing I forgot. a parachute

how will a LSD help you with top speed?
can you explain the benefits of a california emissions b series tranny?
I feel like im on B20vtec.com

well im thinking either going k or b20vtec, either way its getting sleeved, and fully built. i feel if i can make around 500whp, with right gearing and aero ill get atleast damn close. and if i dont make it, ill see what else i can do to make up the diff. n ya i got the *****, id be in a completly cage hatch, strapped in, and theres nothing to hit if i do go into a spin, nothing but sand...

In all honesty, if your going to take up this large of a project, why not switch chassis? I would go with a LS1 camaro personally, they can be had for 5k in rough shape, and would be a MUCH better chassis to work off from. It is in no way shape or form practical or safe to try such a stunt in a crx

He wants bragging rights
My friend and i were talking about this the other day and he mentioned that his friend had this sick truck which he took to the Utah salt flats and it ran 220 mph. For the tall gear ratios he picked parts from many different vehicles, but what allowed for that ridiculous speed were the planetary gears from an hx civic. Those gears are meant for economy (not very strong though) so they're ridiculously tall. But yeah, what im suggesting is to use the HX planetary gear set.
