well i just picked up a 95 ex coupe, i want to go single cam turbo the only problem i'm having with this tranny is that the gears are too short so what would be the best single cam tranny for turbo. one of my buddys is selling me a ek tranny idk wat model or any thing so would like to know how to check if its cool

CX tranny's are the longest geared, then DX, and then the EX/SI tranny's

well yea long gear = being in boost longer right, plus i dont want to be driving down the street on a 45 on 4th gear and since i drive on the freeway all the time right now when im doing 60-70mph the car is at 3500-4000 andrpm that just sucks

 

get a dx tranny, im not sure if the ek tranny would fit on the eg, but i know any dx is a long geared tranny, thats more than enough for boost.....gl on the build

 

I would recommend the DX tranny as well. CX tranny is just TOO long. haha. CX is like taking 2nd gear to 80 X.X [I don't know the exact speed 2nd goes to but I was in a coupe with a mini me and a cx tranny. haha.]

 

So why don't you build a tranny with just 1 REALLY long gear? Fact is the shorter the gears the faster the car, don't believe the BS, Keep what you have you will be so frustrated with a long gear tranny, you will fall out of boost between shifts and your car willb e slow as ****!!

probably worried about gas...but i have a question, would a 00 EX fit my 92 LX perfect? the only thing thats diff on the EX is shorter gears and the 96-00 have a diff speed sensor right?

 

i'll trade you tranny's. i have a dx one and i hate it i want a shorter one really bad but then i want to change out the 5th gear with a cx 5th gear.

 

honestly i'd keep the ex/si transmission you have and just swap in a cx 5th gear. gears 1-4 will be great for a turbo'd d series and that long *** 5th will be great for the highway, something like 2300rpms at ~80mph or something around those numbers.

 

find a 5th gear from a L3 HF tranny, it'll fit on your hydro P20 trans.
my HF trans has me at 2250rpms at 75mph in 5th gear

Couldn't agree more. You would actually be in boost longer with a shorter trans than a longer geared trans. As soon as you shift your long geared trans is going to put you at like 3900-4000 depending on how high you shift and a higher geared trans more so in the 5000 range. Obviously your engine makes more power at 5000 rather than 4000. Trust me I know. I used to have a Y7 trans in my DX and shifting right at the 6800 redline put me at 3900 rpm. It was very slow to pick up from there. After I swapped in a Y8 trans and shifting a little higher closer to 7100 I would be sitting at 5100 ish and getting to redline a lot quicker

you'd have to find a donor, Honda discontinued the HF 5th Counter Gear, they still sell the main gear, but thats useless without the matched set. your best bet is to find a HF trans and rip the 5th out of it, also use the bearings and spacers from the hf 5th

ya thah sounds right. And yes a longer tranny is better for boost. Depending on how much u run u will rip through gears too fast, not only that if your not going to have LSD a shorter tranny will spin more tires causing you to be slower becuase you have no traction. And if you dont wanna open a tranny and change the gears around (which alot of ppl dont know how to do) then you will get ****ed. As a EX tranny is too short to be on the highway with. If your @ 3800-4000 @ 70MPH then your ****ed. You cant be boosting for all that time, your **** will blow up.

 

any D series tranny from 92-00 will fit in any 92-00 civic..

and how are you at that many rpms?? at 70 in my B16 hatch with a gsr tranny i'm pushing around 3200 rpms...

 

At 40mph in 4th gear i'm at 3,200rpms with a b16 4.785 final drive. I used an LS fifth gear for freeway driving (5th gear / 80 mph / 4,000rpms) . I'd advise you do what the other gentleman said about the HF fifth gear with a shorter 1-4. I LOVE it and do plan to boost on it too

 

Putting a longer geared tranny on a car because you have wheel spin is the wrong way to solve the problem, you might as well just turn down the boost, a longer gear tranny helps with wheel spin because you are going SLOWER.

Gears are not Boost or NA dependent, that is a myth, a wives tale!!

 

how does he have boost at 70 mph at 4000 rpm. you can do a 110mph and not be in boost at 6000 rpm

 

depending on the size of your downpipe, and your turbo setup you could be spooling by then.

 

DX, CX trannies for boost.
