Default 1991 hatch idle issue

ok i purchased a 1991 DX ef hatchback yesterday from a buddy of mine. it runs great when its cold but when it starts to get warm it acts like it is gunna die out an loads up with fuel. if i rev it up it seems to run good but if it jus sits there an idles it starts to chug out an eventually will die!

it recently had the head gasket replaced as well. guy who i bought it from said he thinks the timing is off a tooth but in the past if a sohc is off a tooth it wont idle right at all.

can anyone help!!

Hold on, any CEL codes?

It could be a IACV issue as well. First, post up any codes that pop up.

it will make it idle surge like rev up and down and up and down..... um double check timing, check your compression in the cylinders just to make sure too....

Had a couple of these come in recently with running/idle issues. It ended up being the map sensor and neither car had codes.

wow those are some really low compression numbers :/

i don't think that would cause your idle issue though.. its probably a vaccum leak and/or your iacv. and as was said it could be that you have air in the coolant system. you can try pulling the iacv off and cleaning it out with brake cleaner. let it dry before reinstall. also you could try replacing the seal between it and the manifold. iacv is located here...

this may also prove useful..

did you check the timing?

maybe adjust idle screw to raise idle when it gets to low and wants to stall? when car warms up its no longer in cold start fast idle.

fuel filter?

again basically whats posted up top.
