Next time start by removing the oil from the pan and then undo the filter.... btw make sure to put some of the old oil on the new filter before putting it back on...
As for spilling some oil just clean it up as best you can... use some brake fluid cleaner that will help!

Whenever I change the oil in the Type S, a **** load of oil leaks from the filter on the subframe and everything else. I've tried a bunch of tricks (sliding aluminum foil under the filter to direct the oil into the catch pan). Nothing has worked well.
I use a lot of paper towels to clean up. That's the best answer I have.

Oil isn't going to be a problem on the boot. The cleaner is slightly corrosive. Not enough to matter, but if I had to choose... you know which I'd pick.

it'll dry up a rubber boot.
Just make sure to drain all the oil next time from the pan. Oil wont hurt nothing, just leave a mess.

Take a screw driver and jam it into the bottom of the filter. Let the oil drain out of the filter into a cup, then remove like normal. Look Ma, no spills!
I'm talking about after draining the oil as there will still be oil left in the filter. I don't know if you read the thread but that is what everyone is complaining about.
Yes I am but its kinda of obvious if you take the filter off before you drain it out there will be more oil coming out of the filter!!!
Haha, that is very obvious. I dont know why your sayin that. I dont think anyone removes the filter before pulling the plug.
Too be honest, no matter what oil is going to spill out of the filter when you take it off. All you can do is wipe it up the best you can. I change oil every weekend as a second job and I don't really notice any difference in amount of oil that comes out of the filter if I take it off first before draining. Regardless, whatever oil you miss will just spin off or get washed off from rain water or whatever, it's not a big deal.

The oil filter is mounted higher than the oil pan. So, assuming your engine isn't running... the same amount of oil should come out of your filter regardless of whether you do it before/after draining the pan.

the best thing to use in clean up is silicone spray cleaner. it is non corrosive and dries very quickly. most parts stores should have some. as everyone else has stated, you are going to have a mess no matter what you try. its just one of those honda things where they build a hell-uv-a car but dont get every detail exact. lol
