Default tranny problem?

Hi, all:
I have this 99 accord coupe LX with 125000miles on it. I got this car about 5 monthes ago and didnt drive much. I just noticed that my tranny acting weird, whenever I slow down for a stop or a turn (but not completely stop), and slowly accelerate after that, I feel like lost power for less than a second and everything back normal after that. When it did that, rpm was less than 2k and rev up about 100 to 200 during the time it feel like power lost. I'm worried about this tranny, is it the typical symptom of a toasted accord tranny. other than that, it shift fine (a little bit harsh but kinda expected from an old car). Is there anything I can do to prolong my tranny's life? thx

These series Tranny ('98-02) have well documented issues and this could be a preview of things to come.
I said "Could" because this could possibly be something taken care of with a TV Cable adjustment (Throttle Valve Cable*)(if this were a '97 or earlier) and a fluid change.
It sounds like it's not downshifting as the road speed drops, and then when you try to accelerate away it labors temporarily.
If there are no associated "check engine" lights present, I'd start there.

I found the following thread while searching the archives for info on the AT throttle lever "free play" adjustment when at full htrottle, which no one is giving any specs on. Anyway, this sounded something like your problem, but I dont see where this TSB applied to any 98. I can tell you this though, I read where many Acura TL owners {Model Yrs 1998 thru 2003] had many problems with their transmissions. One guy went thru 4 of them while under warranty. I checked Consumer Reports and they confirmed this. Acura owners said the problems were corrected starting with the 2004 year. Just out of curiosity I telephoned an Acura dealer and spoke to the Shop foreman about this, and he said that the weak link for Honda vehicles has always been the Transmissions ...

[Sheeesh, just what I need. To me the worst thing about any car is Trans and heater core problems. I think I would buy a Yugo if I knew I never had to do a heater core job, and the Trans never had any issues. I can deal with just about anything else sooner or later]..

HONDA AT TSB

I have a 94 Accord with the same problems. I bought the car a few years ago and unfortunately did not notice the problem when I bought it. After many times of taking it to the shop and finally having the tranny rebuilt, with no fix, I decided to file for the lemon law to get my money back. When the dealership found out what I was doing they produced a Honda service news letter from September 96 that stated the following:

If customers complain of A/T slippage when they accelerate after a right turn or after they accelerate from a near stop, it could be due to a condition we call "imitation flare." The flare occurs when the trans wants to downshift after a long deceleration. Then, for a split-second when the throttle opens and the next gear hasn't been selected yet, the rpm flares. Vehicles with this condition can include '90-97 Accords, '90-95 Civics, '92-97 Preludes, and '95-97 Odesseys. The flare isn't transmission slippage, it's a result of the logic built into the A/T control unit. Don't replace the trans in an attempt to fix it.If you suspect the car has a misadjusted throttle cable, you may be able to reduce the flare by adjusting the throttle cable while monitoring A/T throttle pressure B (on Civics, watch throttle pressure A and B). For more info, refer to the A/T throttle cable adjustment procedures in the August '94 issue of S/N. I've tried searching for this article online but no luck. I've had my Accord for over three years with this problem and it drives me crazy, but it still runs fine. Hope this helps.

I'd start with a transmission Fluid Change.

The transmission is now controlled electronically, having done away with the TV cable for the 1998 model year.

What I suspect is happening is that the spool valve that controls the 2-1 downshift is sticking in it's bore, holding the transmission in second gear range as you stop. When you go to accellerate away, it does so in second (and it feels sluggish) rather than first; like it's supposed to.
