swap or bebuild? burns oil.
im looking at a 91 civic si. the guy wants $1000 for it. it runs when it has a timing belt which broke and is in great shape as far as interior and body. but he doesnt know what kind of engine is in it. he said the guy he bought it from upgraded it with a "$2000 DOHC japan motor". he says its not b16 tho. it only has 40k on it but it burns oil like crazy. now is it cheaper to rebuild the engine or to just swap it? im alittle in the wallet right now so which ever is cheaper would probly b best until i can find the money to swap to a h22a. my knowledge is limited when it comes to import cars. thanks
buy one that runs well hows that if your light on the wallet....
you can check the engine code to see what it is....if it burns blue like crazy it wont have 40k on the motor, the problem with jdm engines is you have to take the word of the supplier...but generally its cheaper to swap in a used engine vs rebuild, you may be better off finding a civic in better condition mechanically.

depends on why its burning oil.. diffrent situations means diffrent prices. make sure you get it checked out before you buy the car from the guy. beleave me people will say anything to a kid that doesnt know any better just to get them to buy the car and get it off their hands.(happened to me) a motor swap might be alittle pricey so i would say the rebuild, but we dont know why it burns oil so bad. it shouldnt if it only has 40k on it..
i agree on the fact that it shouldnt burn oil at 40K. to me it either means its a joke or the guy b4 him beat the **** out of it. but the guy im buying it from is a good friend who just wants it out of his garage. but he knows les then me on engines. he said he had a guy that would rebuild it for $500 that sounds kinda cheap to me but like i said idk about imports.. i never asked y it was burning oil. i do plan on bringing my own mechanic tho to check it first. now based on the body condition and interior alone.. is $1000 still a good price? i have no problem letting it sit untill i can find money.

now saying i want to upgrade more power later on. nothing crazy jsut something to have fun with. a balance of power and affordablity. what engine would b my bet?
i was leaning more towards the b20 myself also but i think im gonna try the rebuild if its worth it. i guess he had to change the engine mounts for the swap he did b4 so likey it was worth it for him to do so..
