Default VTEC Solenoid Troubleshooting (Fixing the solenoid itself)

This took me forever to diagnose, but my VTEC solenoid is bad. My solenoid seems fine, but VTEC wont engage when I use it. I finally tried my friend's solenoid and VTEC works.

I'd like to fix it instead of buying a new one (although I can do that if needed). Does anyone know what could be causing my VTEC solenoid to be bad? By the way, I just have it hooked up to a switch to the battery for troubleshooting purposes. The solenoid does move when I apply voltage to it, and I bought a new screen and blew compressed air through all the holes.

It's DEFINITELY the VTEC solenoid. When I say VTEC solenoid, I mean the entire piece (not the actual magnetic solenoid). Any ideas? Thanks.

Solenoids are basicly just a electromagnet core around a moving steel rod, in this case its connected to a valve. Sometimes they can short out, and draw lots of energy but not have much power. They also loose power when they overheat, which can be the case if its shorting out internally. You'd have to test the electrical resistance of the coil (across the plug) and see if its much different from the working unit.

Honestly they aren't exactly servicable. Solenoids either work well, or not, and Honda doesn't sell individual parts for the vtec solenoid. You'd really have to test it with pressure on the inlet port to see if it really works.

how can you determine if it is in fact the solenoid or not? the other day my turbo gsr did not go into vtec at all. when that happened i added a half a quart (was slightly low) and fixed a possible vacuum leak and it worked. but tonight vtec did not work again. . . . any suggestions?

if it doesnt work. go to a dealership that sold you a lemon and test drive a civic and swap the solenoid. let them deal with fixing the problem. or hit a junkyard and find one there. where do you live. i have a spare i could sell you for cheap.

vtec engages when oil pressure is prime. if oild is low vtec wont engage. also vtec engages around 178 degrees. hows your oil pressure and engine temp?

My 2002 Si doesn't get past 4k rpm and it cuts out and does a violent jerk. What can it be? I already checked the vtec solenoid and throttle body, but they seem to be fine.

So you bumped a 4 year old very dead thread as opposed to searching or starting a new one.... good job

Click new thread in the top left corner

Honestly no one will answer you because they'll see the date of the first post or they'll reply without reading to the bottom, either way you don't get help

I don't really work on k series motors so I can't help you.
