Default Welding 304SS exhaust piping what size tips and tung you use?

Curious. Ive been welding alot of exhaust piping and it is 304SS ive been using 25 Amps and 10cfm and a #9 gas lens cup and a 3/32" red tungstien.

What filler is best for this i was using 308 .035" mig wire for this but i find i get a redish to grey finish witch is telling me im a tab bit to hot.

??

Im thinking possiblt dropping to a #8 gas lens would help maybe slightly more gas flow ?

If you need more gas flow... up the gas flow at the regulator. I usually have mine at 20-25 with a #7 gas lens.

25 amps... ur no way near to hot.

your gas coverage is crap, crank up the gas. everything else u got is fine.

Ok ill give that a try. See when i do a fusion weld no gas i get beautiful color and good pentration. Its just as soon as I use the filler. And i do keep the filler in the gas lens area when it cools.

like everyone said, you gas coverage is poor, but you also might want to think about cleaning the filler with some acetone, there might be a little residue on there.......just a thought. let us know the outcome!

i think every thing your doing is right.maybe up you gas flow to 13.maybe 15 you get too high and the gas will tumble and pull air in with it.also think about getting some tig wire .035 maybe .040 in the alloy your welding.

here at the shop we use 3/32 pure tung for basically everything. for nice small beads we use 044 316ss. at about 45-55 amps on roughly 16 guage pipe. youll get the feel for what amperage and speed you like to weld at. keep in mind if you want alot of color make sure you have alot of gas coverage. and take short passes. lower your amps/make sure you have good coverage/and take your time.for reference pics hit up synapseturbo.com

this is what i do on 16 guage ss, now this is my preference. and you should take what people say they do and make it work for you, and may mean changing a few things to fit how you weld, what make you comfortable welding.

16 guage. 3/32nd red tungsten, 1/16" 308 filler, welder set at 60 amps ( i use the pedal to adjust amps if needed.), cfh 15-20 depending if i'm welding in a different positions.

i also have a gas lense. and a number 8 cup.

i only go about 1-1 1/4" at a time, to avoid bad gas coverage.

hope that helps.

Maybe you are slowing down your travel speed when adding filler without realizing it? That's a problem I had early on, the added task of adding filler slowed me down enough to heat soak and overheat the base metal, with the same welder settings.

Yeah i tried again tonight with the same speed as with no filler and its a bit better. But the gas up 2cfm worked awsome .
