Default Smong test fail need help.

getting my 96 ek hatch a smog test and it failed, due to excessive smoke. i open the catalytic converter and I don't see a filter inside that catalytice converter. now my questions is does anybody knows if a the 96 EK hatch dx have a filter inside it's catalytic converter. thanks

I'm pretty sure cars 1996 and up will have it.
