Hey guys what kind of filler rod do you use when welding a v-band flange to a turbo exhaust housing.

Thanks
Jim

You can use stainless filler, or mild steel. I prefer mild steel due to the strength, and if you look around it actually looks pretty nice if done right.

I bolted a normal 4 bolt flange to mine and tig welded the v-band to that, way Easier, plus, ur supposed to ore-heat the housing, then weld it, then let it cool very slowly, at least that is what I was tought

If your turbine housing is cast steel....309L should be used if the vband is stainless

if its cast iron Ni99 could be used

Preheat, then though in a bucket of sand.

True but you can use mild steel filler as well and it will be fine.

To the OP:

Are you talking about welding a Wastegate V band to the turbine housing, or just the exhaust outlet V band?

309L is still a better choice if the flange is stainless.

Ive used 309L and Ni-99 to weld stainless vbands on turbine housings. Both are holding up fine to this day. I welded it inside and out though. I put the turbine housing in the oven on the rack. I also left a metal bucket with sand in there to heat up. Once I was done welding the housing, I put it into the sand and turned the heat on the oven down to 250 for half an hour and then off and let it cool.

I've tig and mig welded plenty of cast iron without pre or post heat and I've never had a problem. I would use 309 also. Some exhaust housings come with the v-band flanges welded on

Not kept on hand usually, some places don't stock it, and if I recall I thought it was a lot of money... but I could be wrong. I just use what I have on hand, never once had an issue.

Nickel rods are for cast IRON.

Most turbine housings are cast STEEL.

Hence, you use a 309L rod if your v-band flange is stainless.
