Default getting my car back?

ok, long story short a mechanic scewed me preatty bad, so the charges came out more than the car is worth, i let it go expecting to get a lawyer i never did. this was about 2 years ago, i kept doing car fax reviews on my car because i still got the title. their was never a lien put on it, i went to the shop 9 months ago to pay the bill lol he was willng to work with me. turns out they let someone test drive the car and it got impounded. i called the impound and it was 1200 to get it out. i said screw it. now a year later i checked the car fax review. and noone has claimed it or put a lien on da title. nothings been done since the last time i regersterred it. its a 1995 dodge stratus es. im just wondering how could i claim my vehicle and get it back after so long. i cant report it stolen after 2 years. I am in Houston,Texas if that makes any diffrence. thanks alot.

not sure where i could post this but i guess move it to where it belongs if it dont belong here sorry.

You get the car by going and paying the impound lot and taking it home. It could be 5 years from now, but so long as you still have the title and it is in your name it is your vehicle. As for what to tell them, you can tell them what happened or nothing at all. So long as you can prove ownership and pay the impound fee they cannot refuse to give it to you.

So you couldn't afford the repairs, so you left it at the shop... they took "possession" of it because you didn't pay them and it was taking up space on their lot so they tried selling it... therefore getting it impounded?
