Default Advancing the timing on obdII tegs...

I was just wondering if you guys have heard before that it is not possible to advance the ignition timing on obdII equipped tegs. Supposedly, the ecu will automatically retard the timing if it is advanced....just wondering.

That's not true. I advanced the ignition timing on my Integra before, and it stayed at that timing. You might have this mixed up with the Prelude. Not sure if it was because of the OBDII, but all 5th gen Preludes' ignition timing can't be adjusted. The distributor houing has 2 slotted (oval) holes and 1 round hole rather than the 3 slotted (oval) holes. That 1 round hole basically fixes the timing 'cuz you can't rotate the distributor. I slotted that round hole so I could rotate it and advance the timing. It went back to the programmed timing.

You have to jump the ECU (which "freezes" the ECU from adjusting any parameters) and then advance your timing. Then unplug your jumper and you're set.

If you rotate the distributor without engine running, is it necessary to jump the ECU ?

If you do it without it running how will you know what your timing is?

When I first advance my timing to 18°, I do it with a Light Gun and the ECU jumped.
When I did it I made some marks at +0°, +2°, +4° and +6°.

When I change the timing the second time, I just rotate the distributor at the third mark.

So my question !

I think nobody knows the real answer. But you can try it yourself. I'm curious.
Try advancing/retarding it once without jumping the service connector and once with. See if you can feel the difference....

I moved the distributor to the max and I`m still too late.... The difference in driving is huge.. But I have a Power FC.. something different.
Don`t know if the stock ECU retards timing if knock is detected.

What do mean too late? What was the timing then?
Yes, the stock ECU retards it when knock is detected, but it will try to advance it slowly until knock is detected again etc...

Is that with or without shorting the service connector? Try retarding it to 12 deg. You should feel that....

That was wihout shorting the connector but the motor off and the battery disconected.

I will try to retard the timing motor on and ECU jumped.
And then advance the timing motor on and service connector jumped.
I will see if I notice any difference...

Also try with and without resetting the ECU. Keep us informed, at least me.

I will try but it's a lot of configurations...

How many kilometers (or how many time) the ECU need to learn the new config ?

If you reset the ECU it will learn immediately. I don't know how long it takes if you don't reset it, if ever....

I think most people know it works because it's in the Helms Manual. But some people say they didn't feel anything. So, the question now is whether this is caused by not shorting the service connector or not resetting the ECU..... or something else.

BTW. In the Helms manual it's not stated that you have to reset the ECU. Only shorting the service connector is described there.

Man, I reset my ECU all the time. After every little change.
My dealer advance the timing, so I have no idea what they did. They don't use a timing gun they said....

Huh....?
If they didn`t use a stroboskop, how could they tell the timing wasn`t off ?
That`s what I meant.
I advanced timing to the max, which is 16° and the ignition comes still too late...
I could go earlier, but only by ECU, not by distributor, which can not be moved anymore....

For explaination:
We say "early" ignition (18°) and "late" ignition...(12°) for example.

I think they have a Honda computer to connect to the data connector (3 pins) next to the service connector. I bet you can read everything including timing with this beast....

Well yes,

I also can read out a lot of data with my FC Commander (settings but monitoing is ).
I can see the ignition, the load, injection duty, PIM volt, knock rate.....and and and.

But without a lightgun I wouldn`t be able to tell if the timing is within the "green".

Hmmm..... makes me think now. Are all sensors in the distributor? Turning the distributor actually changes all the sensor readings in the hard way so the ECU shouldn't be able to notice anything? So why bother resetting the ECU?????
