anyone done aluminum drums?
I am changing my brakes, and thought it might be a good idea to put on the aluminum rear drums of an earlier CRX. Is this a good idea? i don't have the money to put on rear discs, and heard the rear drums were a lot lighter. Have any of you done this? what are the weight differences, what parts do I need? thanks
haven't done it personally but did hands on research for somebody else
86-87 CRX HF(and only the HF) had aluminum rear drums with iron liner. they are almost 2 pounds lighter the stock ones and will fit 88-91 crx and civic with no other modification.<to use on 84-87 vehicles you also need the HF backing plates>
same drum size so shoes are not a problem...not the most common find in the junk yard and not worth the cost of new...but if you find 'em cheap....go for it.

This is definitely a conversion worth doing. Pick-and-pull type yards are littered with 1G CRXs. And if you can find some aluminum brake drums from a 1G HF, you can get them for a song. They bolt right on. And they save about 10 pounds of weight. This may not sound like a tremendous amount. But every little bit helps. The only downside is that they do not have the 8mm holes for easy removal. You might have to pound on them with a hammer and block of wood (NEVER DIRECTLY WITH A HAMMER!!) to get them off.
