Default DPFI Cleaning time.... Tips ?

It's been about 8 years since i have worked on a D-series motor, I picked up this 89 civic wagon for my girlfriends little sister to drive for $300, It's a D15B2 16 valve DPFI engine. 193k and so on.

I am going to clean up so it's Reliable for her to drive to school and work, It operates at Normal Temp, idles at 800, runs and drive good, Shift fine and has a good clutch.

Con's

Smokes blue (oil) on an acceleration and Poof cloud of Blue between gears, The smoke hover's over the road as i drive it with a pretty steady trail of smoke.

My Question is what would cause this? Valve stem seals? Bad rings? But i noticed the PVC was full of burnt oil, I replaced the PVC valve and it sucks fine. But the black chamber that bolts to the block has heavy oil deposits on it. Could that be Clogged? Do they Clog?

on any other note, I pulled the plugs, 1,2 and 3 where fouled with Oil and 4 was fine. I did notice some standing oil in cylinder 2 and 3 when i looked down the tube.

What would be your guess?

Logical comments only please. Thanks

try removing the black box from the back of the block and cleaning it out really well, it helped my d15b2 a pretty good bit and i was getting the same smoking you are speaking of. not really sure what the cause of this is, but i would give it a shot.

- i would suggest removing the intake manifold brace and the removing the black box on the back of the block from the bottom. it seemed to be the best way for me to do it and if your motor is like mine (174k miles) it will be the dirtiest you have ever gotten by taking out 5 or so bolts

i would believe it will help a pretty good bit, but i don't believe it will cure the problem. it really dose not help i have my cat removed a.k.a took a pipe and a hammer to it, but i did notice a lot of the problem went away.

im throwing a ghetto catch can i made out of a venom energy drink can on it in line after the black box and before the PVC valve and let you know if it helps any.

There is a Pretty solid blue thick smoke trail on the road behind the car, I am thinking the rings are bad, Blow-by and oil is burning in the chamber at a pretty steady pace...

This is not just a lil smoke, enough for people 10 cars back to get pissed..

Sounds like valve guide seals and/or rings. Everything is just a ghetto guess.

I had that happen on a engine with a broken valve.
Smoke screen FTW!

Yeah, I agree sounds like valves or rings.

Specialized108 - I like your getto catchcan idea. would love to see a photo of it after the install. those venom bottles are tight.

i would assume you are looking for a permanent solution and not just a temporary fix like i am doing.

if you are planing on making this thing last a good while i would yank the motor and give it an overall refresh (new rings, valve guide seals, head gasket, bottom end bearings, oil pump, water pump, etc..) just to give it the reliability i believe you are looking for.

i would probably check out the clutch and replace it if i would believe it could possibly be going sometime in the near future, and replacing about every fluid in the car just to give it one big *** tune up.

lol, its quite special. the venom cans are pretty thick, all i did was drill some big *** holes in it then found some randon 12an line we had laying around and the fittings as well and threw it all together. little bit of jb weld to fill some non air/water tight gaps on one of the fittings and its pretty much together. pictures will be quite funny because its on a stock *** motor and looks quite out of place

it cost me about 3$ or so to make it (cost of the drink itself) because everything else was free.

Did you install that can yet? lol I have not pulled the black box yet, It's dam cold in oregon right now about 35 degree's. I pulled off the PCV and it was clogged with burnt oil, i clean it carefully, The bearing and spring inside are still good, Maybe i will make a catch can and clean the block box on a warmer day, Ill keep you updated,

I put 8 oz of "motor honey" in the crankcase, That helped with the smoking a bit, but its still pretty steady.

I have not checked for a bent or collapsed valve yet.

bust a compression and a cylinder leak down test test first and go from there. these test will tell you what is wrong instead of ghetto guessing it. As for your valve steam seals are not the culprit but need to be replaced since oil is passing down through the cylinders, since you say that this smoke can lead back down to 10 cars.

the odd thing is that mine still burns oil after a friend and i did a compression/leak down test. everything came out perfect, may just be the oil control rings?

while the car is running take off the line that goes to the PCV and see if there is some sort of odd nonsense coming out of it (whiteish odd smoke lookin crap), if so you have the same problem my turd has and i have yet to actually figure out exactly what it is
-possibly clean out the black box 1st to see if it helps/exchange it with your friends clean one

if anybody knows a solution to my problem, please tell

Update:

40 degree's outside and foggy...lol

I still have a pretty solid flow of blue smoke coming out my tail pipe, I just replaced the PCV valve, cleaned the line, and replaced the "black box" , Runs better.... But still smokes blue out the tail pipe. It must be either the rings or valve stem seals, I was thinking it was blow by caused by the pcv being clogged bad. The black box was clogged with black sludge badddd. We did a dry leak down and there was a decent amount of pressure escaping. I also noticed standing oil in Cylinder 2 and 3. Engine is Garbage.

I guess tomorrow ill change the oil, Throw some 40w in there with this "motor honey" i got till i can pick up a JDM sohc zc for her. The trans and clutch are solid. Id rather spend $400 and buy a complete longblock with everything and re-wire the harness.

Valve stem seals usually give start-up smoke until they get real bad. Rings will give you the blues all the time. Also your plugs were fouled which leads me to believe rings.

Do a compression test and a leak-down test.

Sometimes the oil rings jst get stuck and you can do an ATF treatment to help out. You do have 190k on her though so you might just be **** out of luck. Run it till it dies, and just remind her to check the oil regularly.

It's an Oil Treatment, Go to your local auto parts store and go in the aisle where the Octane booster is and look for oil treatments.

yeah, auto trans fluid. I didn't read your post before though, if your leak down is bad ATF won't fix it.

Basically for an ATF treatment, you turn the crank to 90* past TDC (so all pistons are midway up the cylinders) and pour a few ounces in each spark plug hole and let it sit for an hour or two. Then suck the atf out, crank it over with the plugs out, reinstall the plugs and drive it. You can also add 1/2-1qt of ATF to the crankcase and drive that around for 10-15min then change it out. ATF has a lot of detergents so it will help clean everything out.

Seafoam is good stuff too.
