92 si hatch with 2000 LS motor. Overheating problem. Cant figure it out.
Not sure this is in the right forum so apologies in advance. I have a 92si hatch with a 2000 LS swap. The car keeps overheating and I have no idea what to do. Let me list what I have tried. Any help is very much appreciated.
1. The relay and fuse are fine.
2. The coolant level is full.
3. The thermostat has been replaced.
4. I have jumpered the fan switch that is located in the thermostat housing and the fan works. Always on when the car is on and always off when it is off.
5. I have replaced the fan switch.
Sooo. At this point I am confused. As stated the fan works, fuse is fine, relay is fine, fan switch is new, coolant is topped, thermostat is new.
Does anyone have any ideas of what is left ?
The jumper trick does turn the fan on but I would like it to cycle as it is supposed too. I have not changed the gauge sending switch but I can not imagine this being the problem.

have u made sure your thermostat is opening?
if not when the car starts to get to temp feel both of the rad hoses and see if the are both the same temp and report back

yes the thermostat opens. I have even tried it with it out. Car still overheats. The fan will simply not turn on. Is there anything in the interior wiring harness or wiring that could be causing this ?
i don't think so but, try changing the radiater cap, and if that doesn't work i think it might be time for headgasket...
is it loosing coolant? check after you drive for a little bit if there are any leakages anywhere under the motor. If there is coolant leaking from the timing cover side of it, ur water pump is out and needs to be replaced. if its leaking from the back side of the motor where the intake manifold is, it could be a busted hose. If its leaking under the radiator, then its either a radiator hose or the radiator itself. Also, did you bleed the system? If not, air pockets can also cause over heating.

ahh you might want to check this first......bad relay at the fan.
wire up a direct power source to the fan and see if it turns on.

Ok, I hardwired the fan to the battery and it does work. I am beginning to think that the coolant simply isnt getting hot enough. After much frustration I took the car out last night against my better judgment and kicked its *** for about 15 min. I took it home and the radiator cap was luke warm, the hoses were not expanding, no smoke nothing and my heater never really got that hot. The car has no A/C, no P/S so perhaps this lets the engine breathe that much better. That seems impossible to me but it is really cold outside so perhaps it just isnt getting hot enough. I have tried EVERYTHING and nothing will turn the fan on except for a jumper or a direct hard wire.

make sure you have no air pockets in the coolant system. if you want your fan to turn on, hold the revs to 3k till they come on. thats the way its says in the HELMS manual
have you every completely flushed your cooling system just curious because we had a similar problem with a car at the shop and every thing on the out side seemed to be working fine and thermostat poped every time .... but what ended up doing it believe it or not was a pluged/clogged heater core.. and it being a 92 it could be possible? considereing thiss was an early 2000's car...
what happens is the preasure from the clog just keeps the water almost to the point it doesnt move in that area of the engine and in return i messes with the whole "flow" of the cooling system.... just a pass lesson learned at the shop hope it helps...heater core had to be replace to fix the problem

Be done with it and put a switch on the fan this is a very common problem with swaps bad wiring jobs
