Need help with d16z6 d16 swap, Is it ok to use a p05 for a bit?
Hi,
My girlfriend has a 93 civic CX. The original d15b8 has a very bad blown head gasket. Tomorrow, I am going to put in a d16z6 engine that I had lying around. I will be using the original long-geared CX tranny.
This is a last minute swap because the car is borderline un-drivable with the current engine. It has the original p05 ecu in it. I do not have a p28 or p06 to run the car and I want to know if it is ok to temporarily run the p05.
I have searched everywhere and I can't seem to find an answer to this question. From what I have found, the engine will run very lean as I would assume.
Would the engine run a bit richer If I rotated the Distributor counter-clockwise? How much damage am I doing to the engine by running so lean? I am only planning to run the car far a few days until I can at least get a p06 or a p28 if I can afford it. I am not looking for performance; only reliability, so vtec isn't a concern right now.
Please help me out. I have honestly searched for hours. Thanks

If I were to swap out injectors, would this help? Basically, what can I do to make this thing run nicely for a few days?
I ran the p08 for over a year without realizing it... came with the car, ran kind of rough but reliable for the whole time.
I have a d16y8 so I needed the p28
from what I gathered the p08 is for a d15b motor.
So you should be good.

To the OP, I wouldn't run it very long, and I'd keep the RPMS as low as possible at all times (down shifting included). You're trying to run an ECU for an 8-valve engine, on a 16-valve VTEC engine. You're definitely going to be running very lean. Changing the timing of the distributor isn't going to help, since you'll be screwing with valve timing. And changing injectors probably won't help much either, since the D15B8 and D16Z6 injectors are the same. Drive it like a granny, and get the correct ECU ASAP.
Actaully, The injectors sizes are different. The b8 comes with 190cc injectors. The z6 has 240cc injectors.
If i am not mistake, the engine shuld actually run rich. When throwing larger injectors into any car, given the same tune, the injectors will flow more. I am not sure why I have read that the engine will run lean. I assume because the head flows much more, but I guess ill find out.
I am wondering if the the 190cc injectors will better suit the engine for the mean time. I am trying to find out my best option for what I have on hand.

For anyone who searches, The car runs fine with the p05. Iv'e driven about 120 miles with no problems. It feels sluggish; however, I havent brought it past 4krpm. I got a p06 from a salvage yard today and wil be puting it in tomorrow.
