i am getting a ep3 soon. questions about k20
i am getting an ep3 soon.
i want to swap the stock engine for a k20a2
but i would like to keep stock engine for a while...because k20a2 and 6spd tranny is kind of pricey
if i were to i/h/e and bolt ons to the k20a3,
then engineswap later would they fit in the new k20a2?
or am i just better off engine/6spdtranny swapping first, then getting bolt ons for a2?

I would save for the K20A2 and then get the bolt ons for that... personally I would do suspension and brakes first! It is always the first thing I do when I start a new project...
If you are dead set on getting the A2 then don't spend any money on the A3. For the price of the A2 you could boost the A3 and make more power though. It is all based on what power you want and stuff.
Full turbo kits can be had for less than 4K which will put the A3 pretty high up there. The JRSC kit can be had for under 3500 and yields a pretty consistent 240 WHP with bolt ons and tuning... Do a little research and think about what you want!

yeah i want a n/a setup
i was just wondering if i bought simple bolt ons if they would go over to the a2
because im probably not going to be able to engineswap for a while
boltons are cheap.
i read somewhere that the a3/a2 are identical almost?

if your talking about i/e/rh yes they will all work. just so you know intakes are usually wider for the a2 vs the a3 as well as the race headers so you could by a2 stuff for your ep3 and it work fine. if you buy a a2 specific race header it is 3 inches longer than the a3 version so you would need a a2 header, cat, and midpipe for it to fit without some elbow grease.
The k20a3 and k20a2 blocks are pretty much the same its the Head thats different. I have seen people take k20a2 head internals and put them into the a3. The problem is that the block can only rev so high safely. K20a3 has 1 vtec intake side cam as a2 has both exhaust and intake. I had any ep3 the a3 sucked.

lol some of you guys are getting way too technical for no reason.
All he wants to know is if I/H/E is interchangable between the A3 and A2.
Intake - yes
Header/Exhaust - It depends. If you get a header/exhaust meant for a 02-05 Si, then you'll be fine. However if you wanted to get a header meant for a Type-S (most people do), the header will fit fine onto the engine, but the header is longer (than a header meant for an EP3), and you'll have to modify the exhaust piping a little bit.

although i kindve want something to work on...
its gonna be my first project
kk from the sound of it if i get a stock ep3
im gonna do i/h/e first, then k20a2 swap after a while

what is the difference???
from just reading it just looks as if the z1 has 10 more hp than the a2
it seems easier to get an a2?
i/h/e still are the same for a3/a2/z1???

from reading...
the z1 just has different cams and intake manifold
if ur just gonna change out the cams and stuff on the a2
would it even matter to get the z1?

Well Z1>A2>>>>>A3
That's pretty blunt, but I don't see a point in modding a lesser engine such as the K20a3 when a stock K20a2 will take a a3 with I/H/E, especially if you're just going to swap the engine out later, but then again, you can keep the parts and throw them on the a2

With all respect, I disagree with this. The trouble you have to go through with the Z motors is too much, too much money, too.
The Z motor is better than the USDM A2 motor, sure. But the A2 is just a better buy...you're not going to get enough out of a Z motor for it to be worth all that.
I would also counsel, as have others, that the original poster should not waste money on bolt ons for the A3 since he knows he wants to swap. I would also counsel that he should research the mild turbo applications before he gets rid of the A3.
It's entirely possible that for the purposes of having a 200 HP daily driver, the turbo is going to be cheaper and less trouble than a conversion to a different K motor. The USDM five speed isn't all that bad, either.
I used to have a USDM EP3 Si that was my daily driver, and to this day I regret getting rid of it. It was just a nice little car that did a lot of things well.
