Default 2002 Honda Accord Axle Noise

My son has a 02 Accord that now makes a grinding noise when driving. The sound it makes is like grinding brake but they a good.Sounds more like it is coming from the axles or going into the xmission. They check good and found no play in the axles. Wheh it's jack up and put into gear you will hear the noise and some vibration. This is a pre certified that he bought 2 years ago and has about 85 kmiles on it. The dealer says it is out of warranty but my book says 7/100000 miles. Anybody ever had this proble before ...Thanks

make sure you check wheel bearings they go very quickly at least mine do, wobble the wheels from bottom and top while jacked up this may be your problem

You could have a Hub/Knuckle Bearing failure*. It will be speed sensitive and biased to one side (unless you're unlucky enough to have both go out). You may also notice the noise getting louder / change as you change lanes, this because you're shifting more / less weight onto it.

The bearings check good. I had it jacked up and in gear. The drivers side wheel is spinning and in gear. The right side wheel spins but you can stop it with your hands. I do not know if that is normal but I can stop it from spinning and rotate it in the opposite direction while the left side is still spinning . Is tha normal? When I stop it from spinning I still get that noise.

If you can put your hands on either a length of rod (1/4" diameter will do) or a long shanked screwdriver, you can use them as a stethescope to help locate the sourse of your noise. One end against what you want to sample, the other end pressed against your ear.

The transmission is equipped with a differential, so what you're seeing could be normal. When you halt either wheel, the other should spin faster

The wheel bearings are designed with 2 inner races inside of one outer race. If only one of them goes bad, you will not get the traditional wiggle or play that people used to say to check. they have to be REALLY bad for that to happen.

Does the sound change pitch with vehicle speed? does it get better or worse when going around a long turn, such as an exit/entrance ramp?

I've replaced the front wheel bearings in my 99 several times, over 250k miles. 85k miles is kind of early but not unreasonable. As far as warranty goes, it's an 02 and it's now 09, so 7 years could potentially be up.

You get it right away. And it gets louder, you can feel a vibration in the steering wheel and heel of you foot at the gas pedal. My son called Honda and it is going in tommorrow to see whats wrong. $100.00 dianogis fee to see where the problem is . Then i will take it from there on the repair from them or me.

Glad we all could help
... and thanks for the update. It's just as important when we're wrong as when we're correct
