Default Jdm cluster with usdm speedometer??? Possible?

Ok I have been pondering this for a while, is it possible to use the stock speedometer from my 90 Crx with a jdm instrument cluster? I believe the jdm cluster has a different vss? I'm not too familiar with the jdm cluster but I would like to install one I to my Crx eventually. Thanks for any and all feedback.

Hmm... it has to be 'possible', but it's probably not a plug and play type of thing.
I know you will have to take a look at the traces on both clusters and amp it out for swapping them.
It doesn't seem too difficult, but who nkows - might turn out to be a nightmare.

im pretty sure its possible as well..
You just have to switch out the whole thing.. Not just the faceplace...

Take it apart.. Pull the odometer "chunk" out...
Then swap it..

for future plans, i also really like the car indicator. like in the del sol rather than light up squares.

I have seen an item some where, much searching will be needed, but it was a speedo gear that you place in your jdm cluster, that the needle will read in mph.

can you use a jdm or edm guages on usdm cluster?

i was thinking about getting an edm cluster and use the overlay from the tach and put it in my usdm one, so the redline matches my motors.

Why waste your time? Your best bet is to just buy a ukdm cluster in mph and call it a day, here's a pic

Ideally I agree with the UKDM cluster.
Curious though: Is the UKDM speedo run off a tranny mount VSS or a cable drive?

The UKDM cluster in pic above and the USDM cluster are both cable drive, as mentioned. The JDM cluster is electronic VSS, but thays not that big of a issue. The problem is, the JDM speedo guage is much smaller than the US or UK cable version. I have tried to mount a USDM speedo in a JDM cluster and there isnt enough room, and where the cable would need to be cut into the back of the JDM cluster you are dealing with a printed ribbon cable......too many issues. I went with a Acura GSR cluster, 8k redline and 140 MPH, fairly easy conversion as well.

the1337aaron do you have a wire running from the VSS output on the guage cluster to the ecu thats probly why you are getting the vss check engine light if you have one running there check make sure you got good connection, just my .02

as for swapping internals not possible. you have a couple of ways to ge it to work use a 96-00 EK VSS its fits better in the EF or mod a EG VSS

Second way take the stock Speedo out of the custer housing and leave the cable there are two wires one running to the ecu the other will run to the JDM Speedo input i will try and find a picture or diagram

+1!
Most likely you only have the wire going to the cluster and it's not sending the signal to the ECU.
Your stock cluster with the cable drive had the VSS mounted on the back of the speedo. One of the wires that plugged into the stock cluster sent the signal to the ECU. My bet is your problem can probably be found in the wiring behind your JDM cluster.

Hard for some to wrap their head around the fact the cable drive speedo generates a electronic VSS internaly for the ECU...but it does.

UKDM cluster is the best one IMO.

I just finished putting the UKDM in my 88 HF, geez that was a nightmare. Apparently 88's are different than 89's, and UK is different than US. I had 3 different hot-to's and guides, every single one was wrong and made something not work properly. I ended up just traced everything myself and got it working.

It's awesome now though, on track I was pegging both my 8k tach and 125 mph speedo at the end of the straights, it was pretty stupid. Plus the UKDM one just has a nicer layout for the other stuff too.
