Trying to tighten my crank pulley nut

Just wondering if there are safe ways of doing so without buying the tool.

 

push it down a hill with the clicker connected is not a safe way ((:

 

Get one of those strap wrenches and put it over the pulley. Then have someone really strong hold it while you crank the nut on. I know this works for removing it, so I'd imagine it works for putting it on too!

 

Leverage bar. Is the motor in or out though? It really helps when you can hold the flywheel with a crowbar or something.

 

ya I have an oil filter remover strap wrench haha, but it will probably just bend or break the rubber strap. If you say it worked for you then I'll try it. haha

And I did use the flywheel to loosen the bolt, but I don't want too lose leverage and chip a chunk off the flywheel

and the H22 is in the civic atm

 

any other ideas getting an H22 crank pulley nut TIGHT?

 

What's the torque spec on it? I'd figure you can put the car in gear, that way the crank can't turn over when the transmission is engaged. I guess this only works if the wheels are on the ground or someone is stepping on the brakes for you though.

 

hm crank nut is 159 lb-ft and I did put it in 5th and the crank turns just the same.

maybe I'm missing somthing duh

my husky junk wrench broke tday so Im hoping the lifetime warranty will still hold up at home depot because its my grandpas. A 50-250 lb torque wrench broke at the adjusted 150lb-ft!

 

Put it in 5th...but you have to have the brakes on. I didn't have an assitant, so I put a screwdriver in each rotor vane. I also have a brake holder tool...but it's a pain sometimes.

Your torque wrench broke at 150lbs? WTF?

Sounds good will do tomorrow..ya silly wrench its 1/2 drive and a good 3 foot long too. It may be the bearings, the adjuster that turns the drive counterclock or clockwise just spins and the drive will be stuck then spins randomly. Anyhow a lifetime warranty isnt so bad so I'll get me another.

 

Sounds like you just need a woman to hold the brakes for you B serious. I make my girlfriend do all the lame work when I work on my car.

I just called home depot and they will only replace the wrench if it was purchased in the last 30 days. I have to call husky and probably pay shipping to and from for that junk. Forget that Trap I'm gonna buy a real one.

My GF won't even keep me company when I'm fixing/maintaining HER car.

 

an old dude i know showed me this trick once. he used to use it on tractors and junk. pull out one of your spark plugs and feed some rope down into the cylinder. then just tighten down the crank pulley bolt and pull the rope out when you are finished. any fibers left from the rope should just burn out. i didnt have the crank pulley tool and used this method to change a timing belt once.

 

is this a reliable method?! sounds crazy haha it seems like it would work but no damage, and all the stuff left over would be just burnt??

 

yeah, thats not a good idea...if you happen to make contact with one of the valves open, it will not end well...honda clearances are alot tighter than tractors, Im not saying it doesnt work, just the possibilty of bending a valve doesnt sound good....just put it in gear and have someone hold the brakes

Sometimes it's a real PITA to get my girlfriend out to the garage to help out, even if it's her car. She really likes to work on it, but if it's cold, drizzling, or windy out she won't come outside. You just gotta tell your girlfriend though that if she wants the car fixed she NEEDS to help. lol

Btw, where do you live in Illinois?

 

set wrench against cv shaft, press handle of wrench against cv shaft and hold with foot, torque. (protect pulley - i don't have PS so i chanced it)

 

You could use an old belt to protect the pulley.

 

I'll usually tell her to stay inside if it's cold anyway. I'm pretty used to working by myself. I've pushed cars up my driveway myself (when they're too heavy, I use my EM1 to push with a tire in between bumpers lol), I've done complete motor swaps by myself, suspension swaps by myself....the list goes on. You make creative methods to substitute for 2 people. I even bleed clutches myself without the use of a speed bleeder.

I guess I'm just a hardass. I make my woman work alongside me. Anything I can do easily by myself I don't have her help unless she wants to but anything that's a PITA to do by myself I make her help. She usually likes to watch and learn but she doesn't like gettig full of grease and crap.

Chicago area eh? Where at? I live in Dubuque, IA, which is right along the Miss. river. And if I wanted to steal your car, I'd just steal one of the local EM1's.

 

when i did mine i took the dust shield of the tranny and put a small screw driver in the teeth, that held it in place and it didn't leave any marks. i have used that method a few times a a bunch of civics. This was also on a d16z6 and a b18 but i would think it would work for you to.....

if you don't understand what im saving i can try to find a pic of what i mean....

 

I dont know, I tried doing these things too before I finally gave up and bought the tool.

If your really dead set on not buying the tool for this I'd try putting it in gear, locking the brakes, and hitting it with an impact gun (low-meduim settings) "ONCE" quickly. I personally havent tried this but my friend did with good success.
