5th gear grinding

Default 5th gear grinding

ok so every gear is good until 5th gear. goin from 4th to 5th gear to seems to grind no matter the rpm. only way to not grind is to go into neutral for a second or two before shifting. my clutch about to give or whats goin on?

Synchro is losing its effectiveness. Replace the 5-R synchro set.

I am assuming this is the exact same thing for the 3rd-4th synchros? My third gear seems to be getting worse as I have to granny shift the heck out of it so, it won't grind.

Yes. When you pull the transmission apart, check the synchro to gear clearance to determine how much braking material there's left on the synchro ring.

I had a subtle clunk/grind going from 4th to 5th. It was cured after a clutch replacement and tranny flush.

i have talked to many people who have owned a prelude and i have a 5th gen myself and i have the same problem, but many people have the same problem so i think that it might be a defect from the factory

Mileage and year of transmission would help. 99 Prelude with 197k on transmission. Very smooth except third gear has some notches when engaging. But I would not make a big case about it, because its not constant and never effected my driving. Knocked on wood. ha
