H22A1 runs without evap hoses but not with.
Hey all,
I really need help on this one. I have been trouble shooting this engine for a while now with no luck. Here are the simptoms:
1. Car ran very well about a month ago but had check engine light on. I decided to trouble shoot one sensor at a time and started with O2 sensor. Replaced with used sensor out of a friends civic (big mistake) and ran car for about 20 miles. car started to hesitate and noticed gas milage went to ****. CEL still on.
2. removed O2 sensor and replaced with original. car still ran like **** and would hesitate to start when cold. ran car with original O2 sensor for about 50 miles to see if ECU would reset with no luck. noticed Vtec would no longer kick in.
3. idle went to **** and it seemed like it was going to die. I started messing with the hoses on the intake and when I disconect all the hoses the idle goes up to about 850 rpm but car sound like ****.
I;m thinking it's a ECU problem but don't want to go that route yet.

read these:

(BTW) the service connector is the blue 2pin connector)

I was going to tell you to look in the FAQ, but after looking myself, realized it wasn't there, hopefully a mod will see this and add them, or similar threads.

OK. I just replaced the O2 sensor with a brand new one and took the car for a ride. The car started right away this time but still ran like ****.
This morning I tried to read the check engine code bu pluging a paper clip into the blue coupling behind the center consil. The light did not blink at all. HELP. I also disconnected the negative battery conection and removed the clock fuse while I went to the junk yard for some parts.
After I ran the car i noticed that the car still burn alot of gas. I went through five bucks of gas in 10 miles.

did you use the 2pin blue connector? I think there are 2 back there, a 2 pin and a 3pin. Also, if you took off the battery cable before you tried this, you cleared whatever codes were in there, so you may need to run the car until the light comes back on, then check again.

I checked the code using the one with two prongs. i did this before i disconnected the battery. Additionally, the code does not reset whrn i disconnect the battery or it's detected right away because the CEL appears right away when I turn the car on after disconnecting the battery for a day.
just to make sure, you are turning the key to the "run" position right? Is the light on solid and not blinking, or not coming on at all?
alright, at this point my recommendation is to download the pdf version of the FSM, and run through the flowcharts in there, the MIL is not behaving as it should for some reason. When the CEL stays on solid when the service connector is jumped, that indicates there is no code stored in the ECU, but you say that the CEL comes on immediately after the car is started.
If it helps at all, I forgot to mention that while I was driving the car earlier today i would try to coast the car in neutral but the car would shut off at high speed while in neutral.
by the way, where do I ger the FSM?

Why does everyone always skip the most important question when they throw a code?
That question is, "Why am I throwing this code?"
When you throw an O2 sensor, it can mean more than just a bad o2 sensor,
You will throw a code for bad o2 sensor when your A/F ratio is out of wack, means your injectors could be the issue here.

No disrespect but I highly dought it could be the injectors.
Car ran fine until I put in the civic o2 sensor now it won't run right.

hes not saying its the injectors thats just an example.
hes saying just cause it says o2 sensor doesnt mean it is that. it could be but it could also be the o2 sensor thats picking up the problem...get it?
you could be leaning out and the o2 sensor it seeing that and giving you a heads up that something is pissing it off...
do the flow chart testing on the o2 sensor using a dvom. if it tests good, then you can start looking other places.
those flow charts will also be able to point you in the direction to fix it.
just cause you did something doesnt mean it was right.
