Icon2 Need Help - 89 Hatchback - Fuel prob

1.6L fuel injected

My car started flooding out today as soon as I got in and tried to start it. When I did get it running it was huffing out tons of smoke. There is obviously something going on with the fuel sys. It's just dumping fuel.

Leading up to this, there was a problem with it occasionally not starting. The fuel pump would not switch on - I'm guessing the main relay... The problem happened mostly when hot.

The past couple weeks, it would start missing at low engine speeds, like when pulling out from a stop or shifting up at too slow of a speed...car would jerk and act like it was trying to stall.

Any help would be great!! It's my daily driver and need to get it running by Monday if possible!!

Have you diagnosed the main relay as the problem yet? Do you have any CELs?

Sounds like an injector may be stuck open, you can use a stethoscope to listen if they are opening or not.

Sorry, not sure what CELs are..I'm a child of carberated engine days...

The engine is the 1.6L that was the first year for fuel injection...It is the throttle body type injection...Is there more than one nozzle on that design?

Well, here's something interesting - I got in the car tonight after it sat about 24 hours, and it fired right up and ran fine...

Went to the store, filled it up with gas, drove it for about 10 miles or so with no problems.

Stuck fuel injector??

CEL = check engine light / trouble code

Your car has four injectors that feed into the intake manifold.

Here's how you can test if the main relay is bad:

1) Turn ignition to "II" position (car off)
2) Check engine light should be illuminated, you should hear the fuel pump whirring under the rear seat
3) CEL should go out after a few seconds, the fuel pump will shut off and there should be an audible "click" that comes from the fuse box area near your left foot
4) If you don't hear the click, it's definitely the main relay

Try that and see what happens. Mine was bad for a long time, if I didn't hear the click I just tried this method a few times until it worked. It also seemed to not work for me when the weather was hot.

Also, let us know if the check engine light is on when you're driving.

Hope that helps a little.

Ohhhh, ok..Gotcha.

No CEL when driving. The main relay is definitely in need of replacement. I get the intermittant no-starts, then cycle the igniton switch from the number 2 pos to #3 until I hear the fuel pump and the relay click...then it will start. Mostly during the hot weather...It's only happened once since it got below 50 degrees on the average...

OK, you should probably replace it or solder the bad connection and see if it does the trick for you. Look in the FAQ for a how-to on re-soldering it.

Good luck!

Would the relay cause the flooding though?

I got it running, and it was just dumping fuel into the engine...Then sat over night and was fine...

Hmmmm, dumping fuel would suggest a stuck injector to me if you have no CELs. Listen to see if they're clicking when the engine is running using a stethoscope or even by putting your ear on the end of a long screwdriver and touch the other end to the injector.

if this is a dx/std, then there are 2 injectors. si's have 4 injectors. The dx injectors seem to be more problematic with age.. it is kinda a strange setup. one huge injector and one smaller injector.. my guess is that the big injector is sticking open for some reason. wizco knows whats up though.. all good info..

He said it's a 1.6, so it's the Si.
