My next bike possibility!
As some of you remember, I put down a small deposit ($200) on a 97 F3. After much consideration, I decided to back out of that deal. I guess I was too eager and got suckered in. I'm trying to get my deposit back but we'll see. (At least it wasn't that much..)
So I looked at a bike today, a 2000 CBR600 F4, Orange/Black. 11000 miles, Yosh. slip on, tinted screen, new tires, very very clean (only small amount of damage to one mirror, but he's including a brand new one), extended warrenty for 2 more years or so.. bike is in really, really good shape.
He would be throwing in 2 HJC helmets (one has a couple knicks on the top, like it was dropped on the pavement or something.. no major damage) and a pair of gloves I think. He would also give me the stock screen, and this ramp made to help a bike make its way into the back of a truck.
He said he would go for $4800.. I might offer a little lower like $4500 and see what he does.
What are your thoughts? Enlighten me.

If I was to buy another motorcycle, I would look for something that is fuel-injected. You won't have to worry about adjusting your carbs when adding go fast goodies. Fuel mixture and pretty everything else is controlled electronically by the bike's PCM.
If you can find an F4i, get that instead. But I don't think Honda made the F4i that year though.
My next bike, when funds are available, will be Yamaha's new fuel-injected R1, or Suzuki's GXR1000. Both bikes are fuel injected.

Yeah, it's my first bike and I think the F4i was new for 2002. Right?
And I can't afford, nor do I want anything /that/ nice for a first bike..

Oh, and I just remembered that he also changed the sprocket to a few more tooth/teeth (what is the term?) ..
He couldn't remember if he went from 42 to 44, or 44 to 48..and I don't really know anything about sprocket/chain stuff. It was professionally installed at a shop, though, and he said it gives the bike a lot better midrange although the top end will be lower.
Is there anywhere that explains this a little more? How the sprockets work and how modifying affects the bike?

The F4i was new in 2001...prior F4s were carbureted (99-00).
As to the sprocket, the stock rear is 45 teeth...if he went up a few, that will LOWER your final drive ratio, resulting in faster acceleration but a lower ultimate top speed. The same goes for reducing the size of the front sprocket.

Same deal as close ratio gearbox on car, little to do w/ power curve of powerplant. Top speed is lowered if it is redline limited and faster acceleration through gears, faster straight line acceleration. Makes each gear's effective speed range smaller, shift more often. Why are you buying a new 600 I still cannot understand. It's not my money but geez, think f3. There's a really clean well loved f2 for sale locally. It's beautiful and a lot cheaper than 4k. Don't consider used gear sweetening the deal. Remember a used lid even if it is your size isn't molded to your head. Plus you have no idea the condition of the foam. It's nice to take it off the guy if he's getting out of biking but don't count it as adding to the value of the entire deal. I guess leathers and gloves are fine. meh

Yes, I was looking for a more used/older bike to start off with. But I've tried to setup numerous visits to bikes but the seller bakes out and/or has already sold it. This is the first bike I found that was really clean, and seemed like a fair and reasonable price. And it's not brand new, it's a 2000 with over 11000 miles. A lot of the older F3s didn't have that many on it.
Thanks for the info about the helmet molding and stuff, I hadn't thought of that. However, 1 of the helmets was only used once.. but I get your drift.
Is this not a good bike to start with?
