96 Accord mechanical speedo help?
Great site because I can normally search and resolve without having to bug everyone. Anyway, I have a 96 Accord LX 2.2l. The speedometer works good as far as speed goes but the odometer (NOT the trip odometer) sticks exactly every 100 miles. Every few hundred miles, it'll also stick on the 10 but ALWAYS every 100. To make it pass past this point, I have to hit or slap the dash above the cluster numerous times until it clicks past that point. It'll work great another 100 miles and then all over again. Not too bad except I drive quiet a few hundred miles a week and just want to fix it. Can the gears be purchased, and if so, where could I get them once I determine which one is cracked?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and Merry Christmas to you all!
Frank
PS: Sorry for being so long winded.

Hello. If the numbers are sticking as I understand your post it has probably been tampered with. You can actually take the cluster out and remove the front plastic glass part and then look at the actual number on the odometer. See if there are signs of tampering. You may just need to move the numbers back and forth to get them all loose again. I am a car dealer and have seen this alot over the years, unfortunitely. I can give you better instructions if you want to DIY. Let me know.
Craiger28,
Thanks for a fast response but I do almost all of my own work and when I don't, I have a friend that is a Honda mechanic do it. I feel confident that it has not been tampered with since I am the original owner and it has a little over 213,000 miles. If you have some good DIY instructions, I would appreciate it becasue this is driving me crazy.
Thanks much,
Frank

well then, if you are the orginial owner there is no tampering, just old age. These odometer's do stick. You may want to look into purchasing a good used cluster from a slavage yard. First, remove the entire center console in the middle of both front seats. Take out your radio. inside where the stereo was there is 2 screws you will need to loosen. They are hidden right under the A/C controller. Once those are out there are 2 more screws on the top of the black cover that covers the cluster. One screw behind the light adjuster, and one behind the cruise control button. A small flat head screw driver is what I use to get these contollers out. The entire black cover should come out, please be very gentle when you do this. You will need to unplug several wire connections to remove this black cover. 4 screws hold in the cluster. Once you remove the screws then the cluster will come out, you will need to disconnect 4 sets of wire connections from the back of the cluster. The clear plastic front of the cluster come apart from the cluster by using your finger to push in all the little clips around the outside of the cluster. Then remove the black cover inside the cluster. Once you remove the black cover you will see the odometer numbers. Use your thumb to see if the numbers are loose or really tight. They might be binding because they need to be sprayed with a lubicant. I hope this helps.
