Icon6 1 layer headgasket B16 TECHS only not a NOOB QUESTION

im looking for info on this subject. i HAVE used the search button. and alot comes up but it is mostly in the prelude pages and some signle cam pages. and what did come up tells me that if i want to run a 1 layer headgasket then i should use the bottom layer. but the info im looking for is. how many people run this?
what are the cons? i know the pros. i used to have a head milled .040 and a stock head gasket now i know that some people say that milling the head is bad. but it worked fine for me. would haveing a 1 layer head gasket on a STOCK (not milled ) head be just (as bad) if it is bad .

i have a b16a p30 10.6:1 compression im looking to get it up to 11.1:1 on c speed racing it says that a single layer headgasket will bump my stock motor to 11.1:1 this is why i want to run a 1 layer headgasket. its just a cheep way to get a little more compression.

basically i want to hear about people who have had this and what if anything special they did while they ran this. i want to hear of first hand expereince not just post ****** posting stories they have heard so they can just get here post count up

ok i see what you getting at, i would recommend going with the 2 layer, nothing smaller, you will have a harder time getting a perfect gasket seal with only one layer, i doubt that it will raise your compression that much maybe to 10.7 :1 lets say you use a .030" gasket, take out 2 layers your now at .010" reducing the volume of the cumbustion chamber, it will bump it but just maybe.1-.2 of a point

personally i always run a 3 layer gasket because, just like P12 EG6 said, it seals better... a 2 layer works just fine too but i wouldn't use a single layer headgasket... If you want to bump up your compression to 11.1:1 i would use high compression valves... supertech valves are cheap and good quality.... thats my .02

I did one layer on my B16a build, and the engine now has just over 90,000 miles and its just fine. And thats using a little giggle juice once in a while.

i personally would just order a cometic headgasket at your desired thickness for the cr level u want and call it a day . thats what i always have ran when i want to run a specific thickness headgasket

thanks for the replys guys... keep them coming..

im not tying to argue with you p12 eg6 but i used the cspeed calculator for compression and it said it would be 11.1:1 if im doing it wrong please let me know. i however do agree with you. i dont see how it could raise the compression .4 from 10.6:1 to 11.1:1 ...

i have known people in the past that have run it like this with no problem. is the only real problemt hat im gonna run into is the headgaaket wont seal... or what about it if just had the head milled .040k

thanks

with a milled head i would run a three layer. nothing else. period.

unmilled head, 2 layer.

so i was looking at the spoon 2 layer one and it says that it raies the horse pwer .3 thus taking me from 10.6:1 to 10.9:1 correct... so would a two layer oem one take me to about the same CR

Spoon Sports headgasket is laser welded. It will raise your compression up slightly higher due to it's thinner design. The Spoon 2ply head gasket is measured at .45mm. Depending on your engines configuration, you can expect to raise compression levels by 0.3.

straight from icb motorsports website... i was trying to copy from inlinefour.com but they wont let you copy pate anything form there site but it says the same thing

I personally have used a one layer with copper sealant on it for 20,000 miles on a 13:1 gsr build. PCT pistons with gsr head. Not a problem but I wouldnt run a one layer without the gasket sealer on it.

Just run the Mugen gasket. From what I read they raise compression ratio a bit and they hold up well.

i dont want to spend money on a mugen one i just bought the oem whole top end gasket kit. which comes with a brand new head gasket. i just though while the head was off and i was putting a new gasket on i would try to bump up the compression. so i was just wondering if there was anyone on here that had good results with a 1 layer headgasket.

so as of now i think im just gonna run the oem one with only two layers the middle and the bottom layer

What is wrong with milling the head? Is it just the reduced valve to piston clearance?

milling the head increases the chance of the piston and the valve hitting, if you lean out. plus if you want to build you block later with some higer dome pistons then you wont be able to use your head. becasue the comp will be too high.

i would trust a three layer headgasket over the single layer, and I would look into other options for increasing power.

what about just a two layer headgasket just the bottom and middle layer. isnt that what the spoon and mugen ones are. that seems safe becasuse the middle layer is the thicker layer so it is kinda the layer that makes a good seal casue it will crush more

if spoon and mugen do it. then it must be ok. right?

Buy a three layer and take the second layer out. I have always done this. You get the bumped up compression and reliability out of a good seal

Middle layer is the one you take out.

now im not trying to start an argument. all im saying is that i ahve heard that people take out the top layer and leave the middle and bottom layer.

is there anyone else that has taken out the middle layer. and only ran the top and bottom layer.

white 4 door what do you have the 2 layer headgasket on. (motor, and whats done to it)

casue i ahve a b16a with a 1 layer. but latley its been giving me some problems so im thinking about going to two layers. is there anything special you have to do. i know with a 1 layer you should spray some copper seal on it.

thanks for the info
