What was the extended warranty on these bad transmissions? I think mines is overdue anyway. It's a 1999 with 149K miles. I've heard stories of people still being able to chnage it even after the warranty was over since they have been so bad.

Any recommendations you guys may have before I strap up my gloves to go fight with the dealer?

Bring your maintaince records and any proof you've been supporting the dealer network. They (Honda) look for this as loyalty to the mark and don't want to get any indication that you're going to bail on the car once it's fixed. I've seen them offer 50% to the repair, but at Honda's pricing it's often cheaper to take it to an independent.

I don't have any records. I bought the car used with like 138K miles on it.

It won't hurt to ask, and IF they offer anything I'd be grateful.

In effect, Honda did no more than extend the warranty coverage without admitting an inherant defect; thus avoiding the messy (and more costly) "recall". So, it's entirely within their rights to agree or disagree to any consideration.
What they fear of all things is setting a policy whereas they end up fixing pre-existing conditions; effectively increasing the sale-ability of marginal units in competitors used car inventories. (Why buy a Certified Used Car from a Honda dealer, when you can go down the street to BumF**k Auto Sales; buy a car with a marginal trans for cheap and have Honda repair it for nothing?)
That's what you're up against
