Default Rebuilding the steering rack

My steering rack has slight play in the passanger side rod that come out of it (up and down) not the inner tie rod. Had to replace the boot and I felt play in it. Did anybody ever rebuild one of these, because I already had a problem with one on another car and I just replaced it ($230 isn't exactly cheap).

I believe it's part #10 that is worn out.

Are you sure its coming from the rack? Usually when you shake your wheel up and down and feel play, its ball joint or bearing play. I might be wrong, but I've never seen that part get "worn out" its normally just the inner tie rod. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

there is no play when you shake the wheel. You just hear noise when you go over the bumps on the right side. My friends car had the same problem. The shaft on the rack actually moves up and down. I'm a 4 year ASE mechanic so I'm pretty sure what's going on. I just need to know did anybody ever rebuild one or am I going to be the first one? It's going to cost me less then $40 to rebuild it, sure as hell is better then $230.

Yes, IIRC #10 is a bushing (Nylon?) that wears out and causes slop. Certainly could be the culprit.
