pop the ball joint taper out of the LCA? or pop the ball joint out of the knuckle?

hit the side of the LCA with a dead blow or ball pein hammer as hard as you can. Do not under any circumstances hit the threaded stud, even if you have the nut on it to protect the threads.

With the knuckle off the car you can beat it out, you'll need to support it somehow though, and if its an aftermarket ball joint they usually have a snap ring you'll have to remove, OEM versions don't have a snap ring, they're strictly press fit. Press the new ball joint in, you can do it with a good bench vise and a hammer if you're carefull. (I have broken a good bench vise this way)

I used part of an old bench vise, basically you need something thats bigger than the ball joint but smaller than part of the knuckle surrounding the ball joint. Its hard to explain, I wish I had some pictures.

Hitting it with the hammer is something the backyard mechanic will do, and it's very dangerous. it can be costly to you and the car ( good people do good work )

just go rent a ball joint press or go have a shop press it out and the new one in for you.
