Icon6 96 Accord Coupe tranny issues

FYI. I did a search before posting. I didn't find anything specific to my issue.

I have a 96 Accord Coupe LX auto w/256K miles on the odometer. Car was running fine up until last week. No intermittent issue or anything that would lead me to believe that it was going out.

However I do need to mention that the car did take about 1 ft of water during Hurricane Ike. Fortunately for me, the car started up immediately once I replace the ECM and a few fuses.

I've been driving the accord daily for over 2 months when the transmission just stopped working. It happened on the worst day possible. It was cold (32 degrees), gusty and raining. I got caught at a red on my way home. When the light turned green my car wouldn't move. It would just rev up. I moved the gear selector through all the gears and nothing. I had to push it out of the way. No check engine light.

The funny thing is when I first start the car, it'll drive forward just fine but eventually stops moving. My idle flucuates up and down consistantly once the tranny quits working.

Is my tranny shot or is it something electronic? I'd appreciate any information or suggestions you guys may have. Thank you in advance.

When you say it "took" 1 foot of water, do you mean inside the car? or just a big puddle on the ground?

Have you EVER changed the ATF on the car?

Yes, I has about a foot of water inside the car. The waterline was up to the gear selector.

No, I have not had the ATF changed. I had it towed to a shop when it left me stranded. I requested the tranny to be flushed and fluid changed. The mechanic calls me back less than 5mins to tell me that my tranny is gone and a flush would be a waste of money. Offers to install a rebuilt tranny for $1800! I refused and had it towed home.

I'd like to try a few things myself before I decide what to do. Once again, I'd appeciate any suggestions.

Was ther an existing comprehensive insurance policy in effect at the time of this flood?
You may have recourse and make a claim against the insurance company for flood damage.
They would most likely total the vehicle and have it either scrapped, or offer to pay it off and let you keep it (for parts)*; but at least you'd have some money to play with.

P

*it couldn't be registered from that point on (Flood damage noted on subsiquent titles)
