Like the title said. How do I restore my door caps and body trims to original black condition? Will wet sanding do the trick? Any chemicals I can use?

 

peanut butter.. trust me it WORKS!
my brother used it on his black trim on his Jetta and the black bumpers and trim turned out PERFECT.

It's because there's a lot of oil in the peanut butter. It will work for a while but it's not permanent.

yeah peanut butter works for a little bit but not forever. Your going to want to get this stuff called back to black dye. I have a link on my comp to it I'll post it when I get to it I think it's like $15.

 

I just sanded and painted mine semi-gloss black and they look like new.

 

I lied its only $12 and much better then putting paint on them.

when i had my fox body mustang the black trim looked like ***, so i went to autozone and bought a couple cans of black trim paint, and 2 cans of clear, masked the trim off and sanded with a sanding sponge, washed off, dried, then painted a couple coats, then wet sanded, then washed, then dried, then cleared the trim. came out looking brand new

 

So what part of "restore" do you not understand?

 

Yeah bro back to black is made by Mothers car cleaners and that'll make em look brand new i used it on my rex, and mine turned out great.

 

use methanol. yeah it works great. mine looked white and i scrubbed um down pretty good and they looked like new and it hasnt came back in about a year. so i think its perminate lol we use the stuff at work to wipe down trucks. and sometimes our neighboring bisness guy will come over and steal some of it to run in his turbo gto.

 

and when i mean run in his gto i mean methanol injection.

 

so what is it? pure methanol?

 

I have used stuff by bondo I believe called restoblack. Its about 6 bucks, I used it on my 86 Thunderbird when the trim was greyish white and it brought it back to black. It looks great for about 6 months when parked outside all the time. It's a black dye that wont damage the trim at all. You can get it at walmart.

 

About the dye I don't think that stuff really works on the door pieces. It works on the rest of the trim though. Cuz the door trim has a rubber layer on top, and all the other pieces of trim are only made of plastic.

The part where some 15-20 year old parts do not restore that well, and it is easier to replace with new parts.

The part where I offer a different idea on a public forum that might work better.

I do, however, appreciate all the other great suggestions from the other posters though. Will give it a try.

 

I used restore black on ALL the trim pieces on my crx tonight and it looks great. I have spare pieces laying around so I wont cry if it messes up, but it appears to work great. I had to hit my mirrors twice where the black had faded severly, but it looks factory fresh now.

 

wetsand. and krylon fusion( for plastic) bonds perfectly. painted my da mouldings...look oem, even some interior plastics . i love krylon fusion!

Look into a product called SEM trim black, it matches the color perfectly when they were brand new, thats what I used, and a lot of other people have too, but the bumper paint from the parts store works well too.
