Default what oil to use?

I was wondering if the weight of the oil should change with age?

I live in TX and it can get cold but usually not below the 20s. Last oil change was 5w-30 on an h23 but my friend said it should be heavier since teh cars old - 250k miles

this is a climate type question. its been discussed before. i leave 5w-30 in mine all year round. the manual that comes with the car even states it. you could go with 10w-30. whether is 5 or 10 once the car warms up, its all the same. the higher the number the thicker the oil. my car has age but i don't change the weight. maybe the type of oil but not the weight.

If the car doesn't burn any oil, stick with the 5W-30.

If the car burns oil profusely, use 10W-40.

i heard that 0W 20 is the way to go. But I dont know my self. If you go to mugen website mugen-power.com they sell 0W 20 for all/ most of the cars they offer parts for. So i was strongly thinking to switch over, but i would like to hear people opinion before i mess something up.

once the oil is heated up, the cold weight won't affect a damn thing, so if you have leaks then a 5 cold or a 10 cold would help, but if not, get a 0w-xx, 0w-20 or 0w-30, and remember, a better quality oil will protect better then a cheaper oil, i like amsoil

Absolutely not. Especially with an H-series engine, a notorious oil burner. All you'll be doing is literally vaporizing money into thin air.

As I said above: 5W-30 viscosity if the car doesn't burn much oil, and 10W-40 if it does.

There is some truth to that.

But you probably don't want to hazard a guess, use oil pressure as a guide if you want to mess around with things.

i stand corrected. i was looking thru the helms the other day and it actually used 10w-30 from 0 degrees to 100+ and 5W-30 was from something like -15 degrees to 40-50 degrees. but still either way, once its at running tempeture, doesn't mean much. but if your motor is burning oil like most h22 due to vtec then a thicker oil could help.
