Default Poll and Discussion:Rebuild or replace A/T

Hey there guys, my tranny just went in its last miles. I don't know what's up with it. I thought 5th gen Auto trannies are bullet proof, a tank, but i guess not anymore.

What should I do now? Rebuild or replace? So far the cost of rebuild is 2X of that if it's replaced by a used unit.

I am planning to keep this car a while longer. Maybe 4 more years hopefully. I don't drive that much, but I still would like reliability.

So what's your opinion??? If you have experience in this issue, please tell me how much it cost. Or any matter relating to this subject. Thank-You!!!

Anyone care to explain why they chose that option?

I sold my 5spd for the equivalent of $50

I think you'll be able to source one with ~150k miles alot cheaper than you can rebuild it

Why put a whole bunch'a money in a car you're going to dispose of in a "Few Years" and that's only worth 4k?

just buy a used remanufactured tranny, they hold up just fine, they arent expensive and you can put it in yourself wasting no money on labor.

Well, I am not going to sell this car at all actually. If it runs and awesome condition, my family is keeping it. Just as a spare car. No point of selling a perfectly good engine and car.

I think I'm going to go ahead and replace. Hopefully I can find a super low miles one as the car only has 115K on it right now instead of the california standard of 180k miles. Not too bad. =P
